2015 WHSFL Award Winners

The Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) concluded its season this week with their awards banquet. Among the many winners this season, the Vincent Massey Trojans upset victory over the St.Paul’s Crusaders is the one that stood out the most.

First off, Garden City Gophers head coach Beau Wilks received coach of the year. Wilks name was chosen out of 11 others. Assistant coach of the year was awarded to Maples Marauders Russ Wallace.

The Arnie Taylor Memorial Volunteer award was given to Susan Lachowich from the Kevlin Klippers.

Eryk Bujalski of the Vincent Massey Trojans won The Robert Whitlaw Memorial Award.

This award is handed to a rookie in grade 9 or 10 who displays excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community.  The selection of the award winner is made by WHSFL coaches.

Tony Rossi from the Grant Park Pirates was awarded the Kas Vidruk Memorial Award.

This trophy is awarded to a WHSFL player who typically plays the “down lineman” position.  The Kas Vidruk award recipient displays a high level of playing ability, school citizenship, fair play and scholastic standing. The winner will receive a plaque and a perpetual trophy will be given to the player’s school to be kept for a one year period.

Elite Performance Center players of the year for offense are Ethan Paul of the Sisler Spartans and Kelvin Klipper’s Michael Raaflaub. On the defensive side of the ball Garden City Gopher’s Marcel Arruda-Welch was given the award.

The Jim Foubister Award was presented to Kildonan East Reivers Danny Giang.

This award is given to a football player who displays excellence on the field, sportsmanship, teamwork and is an overall good person.

Liam O’Brien was chosen for the John Potter/D’Arcy Bain Sports Physiotherapy Award.

This award is presented to a graduating high school football player who is planning on continuing their football career. The selection is based on the development made by a player during their high school playing career. A bursary will be given to the player at the time of registration in a higher level football program.

Michael Raaflaub of the Kelvin Klippers won the Harry Hood Memorial Trophy.

This trophy is awarded to the football player who demonstrates the standard in playing ability, school citizenship, fair play and scholastic standing. A scholarship of approximately $500.00 will be awarded to the trophy recipient upon registration at an educational institution of their choice next fall.
