BLOG: Hugo “Rocket/Missile Golden Boy” Richard maybe clinches the Hec Crighton?

On Sunday, The Rookie and Laval Rouge et Or star QB, Hugo Richard put on a show that put him into the Laval record books and RSEQ book.

The first record he broke was the record for most passing yards in a game by Laval QB with 506 yards shattering the previous mark which was 416 by Mathieu Betrand in 2003. The next record was he had 7 touchdowns in one game which broke the previous record of six which was recorded by Benoit Groulx in 2006. This is also new RSEQ record. The last record is most touchdowns by a Laval QB in one season with this game he now has 19 touchdowns and also breaking Benoit Groulx previous mark of 18 in 2009.

Hugo Richard so far this season in six games has 19 touchdowns and has passed for 2061 yards and only three interceptions. He also has a completion percentage on his passes of 68.4% (130/190), which puts him second in the CIS in that category while first belongs to his RSEQ counterpart and University De Montreal QB,Gabriel Cousineau who has 71.9%(128/178). He is third in the CIS in passing yards. His 19 touchdowns put him at the top of the CIS in that category. Hugo Richard averages 343.5 yards per a game which is the most in the CIS. Interesting point all the other QB average less than 300 yards per a game. The Calgary Dinos QB, Andrew Buckley averages 297.4 per a game which put him in second place. Buckley also has 17 touchdowns which is also good for second place.

The Hec Crighton last year went to Bishops Gaiters fifth year pivot, Jordan Heather who shattered the CIS passing yards mark with 3132 yards. Heather had 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games. He had a completion rate of 60.7%. Hugo Richard is very likely going to past him in touchdowns and also in QB completion rate this year.

The last Laval player to win the Hec Crighton was Benoit Groulx who clinched in 2008. Groulx that year had 12 touchdowns and only threw two interceptions and also had 2385 passing yards. Groulx also had a completion rating of 75.2%. The Rouge et Or won the Vanier Cup that year beating Western .Groulx became the fourth player to win the Hec Crighton and Vanier cup in the same year which brings me to the question can Hugo Richard be the fifth.

Since Hugo Richard is a rookie he has a lot of chances to win the Hec Creighton and possibility to win it more than once. The Former Saint Mary Huskies QB, Chris Flynn won the award in three straight years from 1988-1990. Four CIS players have won two Hec Crighton. The following players have won it twice, former Saint Mary Huskies QB, Erik Glavic who won it in 2007 and 2009.Former Queen Gaels QB, Tommy Dennison who captured the award in 2002 and 2003. Former Mount Allison Mounties RB, Eric Lapointe who won it in 1996 and 1998. Former Western Mustangs RB, Tim Tindale who won it in 1991 and 1993.

Will Hugo Richard win the Hec Crighton? His numbers prove that he is worthy of it and also he plays for the number one team in the nation. The one thing we can agree on is he will win the Peter Gorman trophy for CIS rookie of the year. I project him to end the year with 25 Touchdowns and pass for 2561 yards. Laval closes out the RSEQ against McGill and then second place team, Montréal Carabins.
