BLOG: Monday sacks

On Saturday, four CIS teams were battling it out to found out which two teams will be in the fifty Vanier Cup next Saturday at Molson Percival stadium in Montreal. The Montreal Carabins hosted the Manitoba Bisons in the Uteck Bowl while the McMaster Marauders hosted the Mount Alison Mounties in the Mitchell Bowl. MTA came into the game undefeated with an 8-0 record. In the end, Montreal Carabins beat the Manitoba Bisons by a close score of 29-26 and Marauders beat the Mounties by a score of 24-12. They were many hard choices to pick from defensive players from each team this week but I believe I made solid selections.

Manitoba Bisons: Defensive end, Lauren Kroeker was great on the defensive line in the lost to the Carabins. He had five solo tackles and three assists. He also sacked Carabins QB, Gabriel .Cousineau once for a loss of eight yards. Even through the Bisons lost some good news did come for Kroeker as he was put on the Montreal Alouettes negation list after the game.

Mount Alison Mounties: Defensive back, Kwame Adjei was the best defensive player on the field on Saturday. Too bad his effort was in a losing cause as the Mounties got their first loss of the season at the hands of McMaster in the Mitchell Bowl. Adjei had eight solo tackles and three assists. Adjei big moment came when he forced McMaster’s Wayne Moore to fumble the ball and then recovered it for five yards. He had a total 9.5 tackles in the game.

Montreal Carabins: Linebacker, Byron Archambault was a dominant force once again in a big game. There is a reason why he might win the President trophy for CIS defender of the year. Archambault had six solo tackles and three assists on tackles. In total he had 7.5 tackles in the game. He forced two fumbles, one of them was the key moment of the game as Jordan Yantz was leading his Bisons to a game winning touchdown drive near the end of the game. Archambault and teammate Anthony Coady sacked Yantz and recovered the ball to guarantee the victory and Montreal celebration happened on the field. The Carabins defense is the main reason why they are in the Vanier Cup this year. They had 29 quarterback sacks and also since their first loss of the season to the mighty Laval Rouge et Or, the team has not allowed a team to score more than 17 points on them.

McMaster Marauders: Defensive lineman, Mark Mackie was a big deference maker in the McMaster victory over Mount Alison in the Mitchell Bowl. Mackie had five tackles in the game. Three of his five tackles were quarterback sacks which resulted in a loss of 12 yards. The Marauders sacked Mount Alison quarterback, Brandon Leyh nine times in the game which resulted in a loss of 63 yards. The defense also held Mounties all-star running back, Chris Reid to 73 yards.

So who is ready for defensive showdown in the fifty Vanier Cup? I know I’m ready are you?
Also Congrats to the Mount Alison Mounties and the Manitoba Bisons on amazing season. Both teams surprised many people this year.
