BLOG: RSEQ Mid-Season Awards

We have hit the halfway point in the RSEQ season and we can separate the contenders from the pretenders already. The teams that can win the RSEQ are Laval Rouge et Or University of Montreal Carabins and Sherbrooke Vert et Or. Concordia Stingers are on the crisp of challenging the top three but not this year. I’m now going to name my MVP, defensive player of the year and top rookie.

RSEQ MVP so far is a tossed up between two fifth year quarterbacks, Gabriel Cousineau from the Montreal Carabins and Jeremi Roch from the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. Cousineau in the four games this year has passed for 1173 yards along with six touchdowns and only four interceptions. Cousineau along with Montreal Carabins offensive leads the RSEQ in total offense. He leads the CIS in passes completed percentage with 75.2%. He averages 293 passing yards a game. Cousineau last season, helped lead the Carabins to their first ever Vanier Cup and Dunsmore Cup win. The Carabins look so far like they have a great chance of repeating as Quebec Champions as they only have one lost.

Jeremi Roch in the four games this year has passed for 1223 yards which puts him in the top ten in the CIS for passing yards, he also has thrown eight touchdown passes along with only two interceptions. Roch averages 305 passing yards a game and has completed 61.9 of his passes this year. Roch is regarded as one of the best Quebec quarterbacks ever. He is first all time or will be at the end of the year in touchdown passes and passing yards. For the last four years, the Vert et Or have always been talked about as the team that could enter the fold as a top team in the country. Finally this year they have reached that step almost beating the Laval in OT and hammering Concordia in its first game of the year. If the Vert et Or can keep on winning it will be foolish not to give Roch the mvp.
If the Rouge et Or can keep on winning like they have without last season MVP and CIS rookie of the year, Hugo Richard you might have to add Marc-A Langevin or Christopher Amoah names to the list of MVP candidates.

RSEQ defensive player-McGill Redmen second year linebacker, Karl Forgues.
Last year,Forgues won the RSEQ rookie defensive player of the year after having 59 solo tackles which placed him second in the CIS.He had 74.5 tackles all together which place him second in the CIS.Lasly he had eight sacks in eight games as well. This year in his sophomore season he has recorded 26 solo tackles, 16 assists for a total of 34 tackles in four games. He averages 8.5 tackles a game which is fourth best in the CIS. The Redmen team is looking good this season rebounding after last season disappointing year which saw the team get no wins. Forgues is the main key in Redmen success on defense.

RSEQ Offensive and defensive Rookie of the Year-Stingers running back, Jean-Guy Rimpel and Laval Rouge et Or defensive lineman, Mathieu Betts. In the first two games of the year, Concordia was near the bottom in rushing throughout the CIS that was before they found, Jean Guy. Rimpel had his coming out party against the McGill Redmen where he had 14 carries for 135 rushing yards and one touchdown. Rimpel in the first four games has 32 carries for 218 rushing yards. He averages 6.8 yards per a rushing play which puts him eighth in the CIS for that category.

The 20 year old, Betts is having one good start for the Rouge et Or. He has nine solo tackles, two assists for a total of ten tackles. He might not be tackling but he sure knows how take down a quarterback as he has five sacks this season in only four games. The five sacks puts him second in the CIS for sacks. The Rouge et Or right now has only its opponents to score 35 points on them in the four games which leads the CIS in least amount of points scored. The Rouge et Or also leads the CIS for lowest passing yardage by opponent QB per a game as they only have allow 227 yards per a game. Betts is following in the footsteps of last year’s Quebec lineman of the year, Vincent Desloges.

Honorable mention-Stingers third year QB, Trenton Miller who is in his first year of Canadian football after transferring from Mars Hill academy in North Carolina . Miller in the first two games would come in relief of then QB, Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren. Miller won the starting job in the game against the Redmen where he threw for 275 yards along with two touchdown passes. Miller in the first four games has thrown for 899 yards along with nine touchdown passes and lastly a completion % of passes which is 68.5% and ranks him seventh in the CIS.

I hope you enjoy my picks for the RSEQ mid-season awards.
