Cambridge Lions bantam team take first OVFL title at the Rogers Centre

After being down seven points at halftime, the Cambridge bantam Lions were able to hold the Ottawa Myers Riders off of the score board during the second half to come back and win the game.

A concerted effort from Cambridge’s offensive and defensive end came together in the second half after trading touchdowns with Ottawa in the first two quarters.
Ottawa opened up the scoring in the first quarter and continued their scoring ways in the second quarter with two more touchdowns, one at 8:08 and another just before the half time mark. Cambridge added one of their own with a pass from 16 yards out to receiver George Monahan.

Cambridge was able to get touchdowns in the second half from Griffen Monahan, Derek Cole, and running back Brandon Metz who was named team MVP for scoring the game winning touchdown.

Mitch Weiler probably played the most important role for Cambridge by causing problems that did not allow Ottawa to score in the second half. To his credit, Weiler was able to intercept three passes, recover a fumble, and well as present a pest-like role against Ottawa’s receivers.

A come from behind victory was something that even surprised Coach Mark Paddock according to an on field source, as some people probably wrote his team off when the first half of the game ended. However hard work and perseverance came out in this one, as Cambridge lived up to their slightly favorable odds to win the club’s first Ontario Varsity Football League title.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
