CEGEP recruit prepared to make an impact at Bishop’s

CEGEP linebacker/rush end signs with RSEQ team.

Patrick Smith will be continuing his gridiron career in his home province.

Recently, the 5ā€™11, 230 pound linebacker/rush end from Dollard des Orneaux, Quebec signed with Bishopā€™s Gaiters.Ā  Smith will join the team for the 2015 RSEQ season.

ā€œAlthough I was recruited by other schools, I chose Bishops because I really liked the coaching staff when I was recruited and went to visit them; they were all very positive and I feel as though the program is on the rise,ā€ commented Smith on his commitment.Ā  ā€œI also wanted to get away from the city of Montreal to a small town.ā€

ā€œI think itā€™s going to be a life changing experience for me to live away from home. I also feel I can make an immediate impact on special teams and on the defensive side of the ball. I have been training more and harder than I ever have in my life and I am in the best shape that I have ever been in. I am going to show up to camp with a full heart, ready to make a difference.ā€

Smith completed his CEGEP career with Division 2 team, John Abbott College Islanders.Ā  This past season, the defensive standout recorded three sacks, registered 32.5 tackles and five tackles for a loss.

Previous to the Islanders, Smith suited up for both the North Shore Lions and North Shore Mustangs.

Set to embark on the newest chapter of his career, Smith is looking forward to reuniting with some familiar faces while being instructed by someone new.

ā€œSome players from my past John Abbott teams are also going there so it made it easier to choose Bishops knowing I had teammates who will be there as well,ā€ expressed Smith.Ā  ā€œCoach Kevin Mackey seems like a really great coach; he is young, full of energy and I feel like I can relate to him and the other coaches very easily.ā€

ā€œI am excited and honored to play football this upcoming season as a Bishop Gaiter.ā€
