βWe are surging forward and are looking forward to the Fallβ said Emma Phillips, president of the Whitby Lions. βAs a member of the Ontario Football Alliance, our goal is to get more children, both boys and girls, involved in physical activity and in the game of football. By offering the only touch football program in Durham Region, our hope is to introduce children and parents to the sport, teach them the fundamentals and have them catch the football bug.β
According to director of football operations Paul DaSilva βfootball is a true team sport with positions on the field for youth of all shapes, sizes and abilities. With the ongoing concerns surrounding injuries stemming from contact sports, our commitment is to ensure all players have meaningful participation in every game and compete in a non-contact environment while learning the lifelong skills of leadership, teamwork and good sportsmanship.β DaSilva adds βplayers can enjoy and learn the game of football without worrying about potential injuries through contact. If they do become interested in playing tackle, our hope is that they can successfully move onto a contact program offered at their high school or other community organizations. We are confident that our players will be prepared to participate in any organized sports as they will have developed the ability to play safely and the confidence to compete at any level.β
