#CFC50 Playoff game preview (MB): Trojans defend their first varsity championship

The 6-1 Vincent Massey Trojans begin their quest to defend their first varsity championship against the 2-5 Garden City Gophers on Friday.

Leading the Trojans into the 2016 playoffs is quarterback Andreas Dueck. Dueck finished the year with 1370 yards and 19 touchdowns. One of Andreas’ main targets is receiver Abdul Gassama. The young receiver hauled in 26 passes for 7 touchdowns and 417 yards in 2016.

Massey also has the luxury of having #CFC100 Jalen Burley on both sides of the ball. Burley registered his 9th sack of the season in his last outing. Receiver Liam Casey has the most touchdowns in the Potter division with 10 as well.

The Trojans are focused as the playoffs are about to begin. “We’re focused right now, it’s playoffs, it’s ‘Money Time’,” explained Coach Kelsey McKay. “We know we haven’t played a complete game yet this season, so we’re still working hard to improve each week,”

Even though Vincent Massey defeated Garden City the first time, McKay acknowledged that this will be a different game the second time around. “In high school sports, anyone can beat anyone, on any given day, so they’re a much different team than the one we played 6 weeks ago.”

2016 was a different year for the Gophers with many players from last year’s team gone. Head Coach Beau Wilkes saw lots of positives on the field. He said, “Our coaching staff saw lots of growth and development over the season and it bodes well for our future.”

Garden City had several tough injuries this season. “Those who have stepped up have done well in situations that have been challenging, especially along the O-line,” mentioned Wilkes. The level of compete from these players is what’s most important to Wilkes and his staff.

Wilkes is aware of the challenge ahead when facing the 2015 ‘Anavets Bowl” champions. He said, “We see it as a challenge – defending champions looking to repeat again this year. They will be prepared and certainly be playing their best to move on to the semi-finals.

We at CFC think that the Vincent Massey Trojans will defeat the Garden City Gophers handily.
