#CFCOVFL Game Preview: Grenadiers face tough test in Week 2

The Kingston Grenadiers varsity and junior varsity teams are going to face yet another daunting challenge as they travel east to take on the Cumberland Panthers in the second week of OVFL action.

The JV Grenadiers triumphed 12-6 in their season debut in a battle with the Durham West Dolphins, on the back of a strong game from Grens running back Connor Allan, who rushed for 160 yards on 30 carries, and the defensive core, which allowed only 104 yards against total for the game.

Grens JV head coach Thomas Dumbrille says at this point in the season his team defence looks solid so far based on the first game.

“I think we’re strong on defence, but I think we’re getting stronger on offence all the time,” he says. “We had two great practices Tuesday and Thursday going into the game . . . we were not favored to win that game, but we don’t think that way.”

Dumbrille says he won’t be present at the game vs Cumberland due to his son’s graduation, which may add to the pressure of playing a Panthers team that is clearly the favourite to win, after they blew out the Halton Cowboys 63-6 last weekend.

The varsity Grenadiers have a daunting task as well, having lost their first game to the Dolphins on a fourth quarter collapse, dropping a 14-point lead to lose 28-27.

Despite the result, there were some positives from the Grens’ first outing.

Quarterback Dylan Fisher continues to command the field in his graduating year, throwing for 238 yards and a touchdown in the loss against Durham.

The Grens also feature a strong ground game in the hard-running Konner Burtenshaw, who rushed for 125 yards on 26 carries.

To counter that, the Panthers had a huge game on the ground as well, with running backs Quintin Gregory and Baxter Balthazar combining for 333 yards.

The juniors will kick off at 2:30 p.m. at Millennium Field and the varsity squad at 5:00 p.m

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
