CFL POW (14): White, Woods, Sanders & Cornish

TORONTO – John White, Bear Woods, Jock Sanders and Jon Cornish were named the Canadian Football League Players of the Week for Week 14 of the 2014 Canadian Football League season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS

CFL Offensive Player of the Week 

John White  

RB – Edmonton Eskimos

Saskatchewan Roughriders 0 @ Edmonton Eskimos 24

Edmonton Eskimos running back John White was named Offensive Player of the Week for Week 14. On 19 touches, White collected 199 yards from scrimmage and scored a pair of touchdowns in the Eskimos’ 24-0 shutout of the Roughriders at Commonwealth Stadium. 

After the defence stopped the visitors on a third down gamble, the Eskimos found themselves in Riders’ territory on just their second possession of the game. White scored on a 36-yard touchdown run on the very next play to give the home side an early lead.

In his first game action since suffering a hand injury in Week 7, the Torrance, California native rushed the ball 17 times for a career-high 192 yards (11.3 yards per carry).

Mike Reilly connected with the former Utah Ute on a 10-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to cap the game’s scoring.

This is White’s first Player of the Week honour in his two-year CFL career.

CFL Defensive Player of the Week

Bear Woods

LB – Montreal Alouettes 

Montreal Alouettes 15 @ Ottawa REDBLACKS 7

Montreal Alouettes linebacker Bear Woods was named Defensive Player of the Week for Week 14. Woods notched nine tackles, a sack and forced a fumble in the Alouettes 15-7 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

The former Troy University Trojan brought down REDBLACKS quarterback Henry Burris for a 14-yard loss to force a fumble. Aaron Lavarias recovered the ball and handed it off to Chip Cox who returned it for a touchdown in the first quarter.

The native of Macclenny, Florida has tallied 46 tackles and four sacks this season.

Woods’ second career Defensive Player of the Week award comes three weeks after he captured his first in Week 11 action.

CFL Special Teams Player of the Week

Jock Sanders

KR/PR – Calgary Stampeders

BC Lions 7 @ Calgary Stampeders 14

Calgary Stampeders returner Jock Sanders was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 14. Sanders finished with 156 return yards in the Stampeders’ narrow 14-7 home win over the Lions.

The native of St. Petersburg, Florida returned six punts for 101 yards (16.8 yards per return), including a game-high 23 yard return midway through the second quarter. Sanders also took care of kickoff return duties, sending back three kickoffs for a total of 55 yards.

The former West Virginia Mountaineer currently sits second in the league in punt return yards with 462 and is sixth in combined return yards with 893.

In Sanders’ four years in the CFL, he has captured three Special Teams Player of the Week awards. His previous two came in Week 2 of 2013 and Week 3 earlier this season.

Canadian Player of the Week 

Jon Cornish

RB – Calgary Stampeders 

BC Lions 7 @ Calgary Stampeders 14

Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the Canadian Player of the Week for Week 14. Cornish ran for 156 yards and added three receptions for 20 yards in the Stampeders’ 14-7 home win over the B.C. Lions.

The former Kansas Jayhawk averaged 7.8 yards on 20 carries to notch his fourth straight game with over 100 yards rushing. In that same stretch, he has amassed 602 yards and three touchdowns.

The New Westminster, B.C. native is second in the league in rushing with 743 yards, while adding 115 yards receiving and five touchdowns in only six games this season.

This is Cornish’s fourth Canadian Player of the Week honour this season with his last coming in Week 12.
