Running back Chris Reid of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Sept. 21, 2014.

Reid, a 5-foot-6, first-year arts student from Brampton, Ont., had 167 rushing yards on 28 carries in Saturday’s 39-8 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

He posted two rushing touchdowns as well as two receptions for 50 yards in the game which marked his first-ever AUS start.

Linebacker Andrew Smith of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport football defensive player of the week.

A first-year business student from Whitby, Ont., Smith had 5.5 tackles (five solo and one assisted) in the X-Men’s 38-29 win over the Acadia Axemen on Saturday.

He also had two tackles for a loss of four yards and added an interception return for seven yards in the crucial final minutes of the game.

Kicker and punter Kyle McLean of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport football special teams player of the week.

A third-year geography student in his fourth year of eligibility, McLean had 10 punts for a total 338 yards (33.8 avg.) in Saturday’s win over Saint Mary’s. The Nepean, Ont. native also successfully completed a touchdown run following a faked field goal attempt.

On offence, McLean completed a kickoff return for 10 yards.

Montreal – Receiver Felix Faubert-Lussier of the Laval Rouge et Or, Concordia Stingers defensive back Kris Robertson and kicker Boris Bede of the Laval Rouge et Or have been named the RSEQ players of the week for the period ending September 21, 2014:

Rouge et Or receiver Felix Faubert-Lussier piled up 212 receiving yards and three touchdowns against the Bishop’s Gaiters. The Leisure Studies major’s haul on the day made up for more than half of Laval’s receiving yardage against Bishop’s.

Stingers defensive back Kris Robertson was all over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or offence, picking up a pair of interceptions, including one he returned 64 yards for a touchdown. The fifth-year sociology major also added 5.5 tackles (5 solo) and broke up two passes in the Stingers’ 29-22 win over Sherbrooke at Concordia Stadium on Friday. The 23-year-old native of Pickering, ON, now leads the RSEQ with three interceptions in three games this season. After going winless a year ago, the Stingers are now 3-0 to sit atop the RSEQ standings with Laval.

Kicker Boris Bede set a new Laval school record by kicking eight field goals in eight attempts, falling just one shy of the Canadian University record. The Toulon, France, native’s 32 points (eight field goals, six converts and two singles) against Bishop’s represents the second-highest single game total in RSEQ history. The 24-year-old Education Sciences major also posted a 55.8 yard average on his punts, including two inside the 20-yard line.

OUA POW Week 3 2014

HAMILTON – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Players of the Week for the period ending September 22, 2014.

OFFENCE: Nate Behar (London, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – Carleton

The second-year receiver from London, Ont. stole the show in one of the most exciting Panda Games in history.

With his team trailing by four and time for just one Hail Mary pass, Behar caught a tipped ball from Jesse Mills on the Gee-Gees 10-yard line and ran it in for a game winning touchdown with no time left on the clock. The incredible play was the talk of the CIS on Saturday night, and garnered attention from national media outlets.

Behar finished the day with 13 catches for 276 yards and three touchdowns. It was the Ravens first Panda Game victory since 1994.

DEFENCE: Cam Walker (London, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Guelph

The veteran lineman led a Gryphons defence that has absolutely smothered its opponents the past two weeks.

After holding the high-powered Ottawa Gee-Gees offence to just seven points in Week 3, Walker and Guelph picked up where they left off, thrashing the Queen’s Gaels 66-0 on Saturday in Guelph’s homecoming game.

Walker led the way with eight solo tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and fumble recovery; it was the first time Queen’s had been shutout in a regular season game since 2005.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Aaron Gazendam (Kingston, Ont.) – 5th yr. – Toronto

The former Queen’s Gaels receiver and Russ Jackson Award nominee got his name in the CIS record books as a punter in Toronto’s game against Western on Saturday.

Gazendam broke the record for longest punt when his kick from Toronto’s 24-yard line sailed over the returner’s head and bounced into the Mustangs end zone for a 101-yard punt. It broke the previous record held by Brent Matich of the Calgary Dinos from 1986.

Facing a tough Western defence, Gazendam punted 12 times for 502 yards, an average of 41.8 yards per punt.

Canada West:

CWUAA POW Week 3 2014

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC – Week 3 of the 2014 Canada West football season may have been the most exciting yet as the improved Alberta Golden Bears notched their first win in almost four years, a thrilling 44-42 shootout with the Regina Rams. The Calgary Dinos proved their mettle on the road, overcoming the pesky Saskatchewan Huskies, 38-24 while the Manitoba Bisons won their second straight game, holding off the UBC Thunderbirds, 20-10.

Golden Bears quarterback Curtis Dell, Huskies safety Mark Ingram and Bisons placekicker Ryan Jones have been selected as this week’s Canada West Football Players of the Week for their incredible individual efforts over the weekend.  This is Ingram’s second time being honoured, after also winning the award for Week 1.

OFFENCE: #6 Curtis Dell, Quarterback (Alberta Golden Bears)

University of Alberta Golden Bears fifth-year quarterback Curtis Dell completed 63% of his passes and racked up 271 passing yards and four touchdowns to lead the Golden Bears to a thrilling 44-42 win over the Regina Rams on Saturday at Foote Field. It was Alberta’s first on-field win since November 3, 2010.

Dell completed 17 of 27 passes on Saturday, one week after tossing for 413 yards. Previous to those two starts, his last start for the Bears was in 2012. He now leads Canada West in passing yards per game, with an average of 342, while he has also tossed the third most touchdowns in the conference with six.

The Calgary-born QB staked Alberta to a 28-13 half-time lead as well as a 44-29 fourth quarter lead. He guided the Bears on a six-play 56-yard drive in the middle of the fourth quarter that culminated in the winning points when running back Ed Ilnicki rumbled in from two yards for the touchdown.

Alberta, now 1-2 on the season, returns to action this coming weekend when they travel to Vancouver to take on the 0-3 UBC Thunderbirds.

DEFENCE: #6 Mark Ingram, Safety (Saskatchewan Huskies) 

University of Saskatchewan safety Mark Ingram once again proved to be tough on opponents forcing two turnovers and completing 8.5 tackles in a 38-24 loss to the Calgary DinosFriday night.

The fifth-year Agriculture & Bioresources student marked a forced fumble and recovered the ball at the Saskatchewan 21-yard line just three minutes into the game. He added an interception in the second quarter that led to a Huskies touchdown.

Ingram, a 2013 CIS All-Canadian, also led the Huskies with 8.5 tackles – seven solo – in the game.

The No. 6 Saskatchewan travels to Regina to meet the Regina Rams Saturday.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #38 Ryan Jones, Placekicker (Manitoba Bisons) 

Manitoba Bisons placekicker Ryan Jones accounted for ten of the 20 points scored by the #9 Manitoba Bisons as the won at home by a 20-10 score over the UBC Thunderbirds during the annual Homecoming Game on Saturday, September 20.

Jones was perfect as he went three for three in field goals and converted the lone extra point.  He also had a 51.7-yard kickoff average on three kicks during the home win.

The first-year Jones knocked down a field goals of 36 yards in the second quarter to push the home side lead to 12-0 then boomed a 40-yard field goal at the end of the third period to increase Manitoba’s lead to 15-10.  He also added a 19-yarder to finish the scoring at the end of the fourth.

Jones is fourth in conference scoring with 20 points after three games.

Manitoba (2-1) will now travel to play at #2 Calgary (3-0) on Friday, September 26 and the contest will also be the Canada West Shaw TV Game of the Week. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. MT.
