CIS TOP 10 (6): Dinos remain No. 1, Montreal and Guelph upset

OTTAWA (CIS) – Fresh off another dominating win, the University of Calgary Dinos are the top-ranked team in CIS football for the fourth consecutive week.

For the third straight week, the Dinos (5-0) were a near-unanimous choice for No. 1 in the national media poll as they received all but one of the 30 first-place votes and 299 points from the Football Reporters of Canada panel. Calgary had earned 26 and 28 first-place nods, respectively, in the previous two polls.

The Laval Rouge et Or (5-0 / 259 points), Western Mustangs (5-0 / 247) and Montreal Carabins (3-2 / 164) hold on to positions two through four in the sixth poll of the campaign. Laval merited the remaining vote for No. 1.

All other teams are on the move in the new Top 10, including the No. 5 Sherbrooke Vert & Or (3-2 / 147 points / up four positions), No. 6 McMaster Marauders (4-1 / 143 / up one), No. 7 Guelph Gryphons (5-1 / 134 / down two), No. 8 Manitoba Bisons (3-2 / 126 / down two), No. 9 UBC Thunderbirds (3-2 / 89 / up one), as well as the No. 10 Queen’s Gaels (4-2 / 27), who are ranked for the first time this season.

Calgary and Laval continued to roll this past weekend, while Western enjoyed a bye in its OUA schedule.

Thanks to another superb performance by senior quarterback Andrew Buckley (468 passing yards and four TD passes) and a 39-point outburst in the final 21 minutes of the contest, the Dinos defeated visiting Saskatchewan 59-19 on Saturday. Buckley, the reigning Hec Crighton Trophy winner, averages 389 yards a game this fall with 12 TD strikes and no interceptions.

Meanwhile in Quebec City, the Rouge et Or built a commanding 39-7 lead before cruising to a 42-27 victory over Concordia. Sophomore Tyrone Pierre set a single-game conference record with 311 receiving yards, the fourth highest total in CIS history.

It was another story for Montreal and Guelph on Saturday as the Carabins were upset 17-12 at Sherbrooke, while the previously undefeated Gryphons were stunned 23-15 by Queen’s in Kingston.

Other Week 6 results from Top-10 teams included McMaster 44, Windsor 19 (at Windsor); Manitoba 34, Regina 19 (at Manitoba); UBC 39, Alberta 21 (at Alberta).

Saskatchewan fell to 2-3 and out of the Top 10 following its lopsided loss to top-ranked Calgary.

The Week 7 schedule is lighter than usual as the Canada West and RSEQ conferences both take a break on Thanksgiving weekend.

Only two ranked teams will be in action, including No. 3 Western visiting Toronto (2-3) and No. 6 McMaster hosting Waterloo (0-5). Both games are set for Thursday at 7 p.m., live on OUA.TV
