RECAP: Gaels open season with road win over Windsor (stats)

WINDSOR, Ont. (September 1, 2014) – The Queen’s Gaels opened up their OUA season in Windsor where they battled for a hard fought 39-30 win over the Lancers on Labour Day Monday.

Quarterback Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) led the way for Queen’s as he threw for 259 yards completing 17 of 35 passes for three touchdowns in the win. Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.) finished with a strong game on the ground despite missing much of the second half for the Gaels with 93 yards and a touchdown while Doug Corby (Burlington, Ont.) had 125 yards receiving and a touchdown of his own. Michael Moore (Mississauga, Ont.) finished with a game high 12 tackles while rookie defensive back Jason Shamatutu (Coquitlam, B.C.) had a big debut on defence for the Gaels with 7.5 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception late in the fourth.

The Lancers were led by quarterback Austin Kennedy who threw three touchdowns for 393 yards and receiver  Evan Pszczonak who had 187 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

In the first quarter the Gaels used the wind to their advantage. The defense held Kennedy and the Lancers at bay to set up strong field position for the Gaels. Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.) knocked off a 24-yard field goal to give Queen’s an early lead. After Corby set the table for the Gaels offence Andrews came through on third and goal for a three yard score.

After Windsor conceded a safety Wamsley tacked on his second field goal of the game, this one a 38-yard strike and Queen’s opened up a 15-0 lead.

Before end of quarter Dylan Whitfield looked to get Windsor into good field position but he fumbled the ball and rookie Shamatutu recovered for Queen’s.

The Lancer offence came alive in the second quarter as they scored on two straight possessions. First Kennedy hit Pszczonak for a 90-yard touchdown then he found Whitfield, who made up for his earlier fumble, with an 11-yard score. After a Windsor rouge the Lancers had tied the game at 15-15.

The Lancer offence stalled on their next drive however and they were forced to concede a safety to the Gaels. They traded the field position for a chance on offence and Beau Lumley rushed for a touchdown which was followed with a two-point convert making it 23-17.

Penalties forced the Gaels into tough yardage situations but McPhee managed to get them out of it finding Corby for a big play. After a successful completion on third down McPhee finished off the play finding Alex Carroll (Victoria) in the endzone to give the Gaels a 24-23 lead at the half.

Windsor re-took the lead early in the third quarter as Pszczonak hauled in his second score of the game and the Lancers were out in front 30-24. Neither team was able to find the scoresheet for the remainder of the quarter and the Gaels were behind heading into the final frame.

On what looked to be an easy tackle of the Gaels McPhee in open space resulted in a 15-yard penalty for holding the quarterbacks facemask and Queen’s took advantage. McPhee found Peter Hannon (Toronto) on the goal line to put the Gaels up by one, 31-30.

McPhee put the Gaels up with another touchdown pass late into the fourth, this time hitting Corby. Corby burned his coverage and left a good gap for McPhee to drop an easy 55-yard touchdown into his hands. Wamsley added a rouge to give the Gaels a nine point lead 39-30 late into the game.

With Windsor attempting to march down the field rookie Shamatutu made his presence felt again with an interception. Queen’s managed to kill off enough time and hold off the Lancers to seal the win.

The Gaels have now won seven straight games against Windsor and will return home to take on the Gee-Gees at Richardson Stadium on Saturday at 1pm. Tickets are available at www.gogaelsgo.com/tickets.
