Calgary standouts newest recruits to join CWUAA team’s 2014 class.

Three Calgary standouts will play in front of the hometown crowd this upcoming fall.

Bailey Wasdal as well as twin brothers Nick and Aaron Statz have signed with the Calgary Dinos for the 2014 CWUAA season.

BAILEY WASDAL:

The 6’1 185 pound pivot from Calgary, Alberta felt the Canada West team had everything he was looking for academically and football wise.

“I liked the idea of being able to pursue my degree while staying home,” expressed Wasdal.  “I also believe Coach (Blake) Nill has in place a system with the right personnel to ensure the academic success of all the football athletes.”

“The University of Calgary had the programs I was looking for, so it became the right fit academically.”

Moreover, Wasdal was impressed with Dinos Head Coach Blake Nill’s philosophy which was expressed during the recruitment phase.  Consequently, the offensive standout is looking forward to contributing to the Dinos success in future years.

“During the recruiting process, Coach Nill really emphasized the competitive culture present in his football program,” added the Calgary quarterback.  “This was something I liked and knew I wanted to be a part of because the only way I’ve ever truly known how to accomplish things is by simply outworking the competition and so I knew this environment would suit me.”

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to be a Dino and I can’t wait to get to work.”

Wasdal comes to the Dinos after completing his high school career with Bishop McNally Timberwolves of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA).  In nine games played this past season, he had 97 completions in 159 attempts for a 61 percent completion percentage, 1790 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns,  413 yards on 36 rush attempts and eight rushing touchdowns.

In addition to his high school team, Wasdal also suited up for the MCLA Laserwolves.

Aaron Statz

AARON STATZ:

The 5’10, 180 pound defensive back from Calgary, Alberta was sold on the reputation of the school and football program.  Also, it is an ideal situation as he gets to play in his own backyard with players he’s idolized in recent years.

“I chose to go to Calgary because they are one of the best schools academically in Canada and have the course that I’m interested in,” says Statz.  “They are also one of the top teams in Canada as well.”

“Calgary is also my hometown so it will be cool to play with guys that I looked up to and watched play when I was younger.”

Statz recently led the Notre Dame Pride of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) to their second consecutive Provincial Tier 1 Championship.  Last spring, the defensive standout was selected as a Boulton Division All-Star for his play with the Calgary Mavericks of the Calgary and Area Midget Football Association (CAMFA).

Nick Statz

NICK STATZ:

The reasons are very simple why the 5’9, 160 pound defensive back from Calgary, Alberta committed to the local CIS school.

“The reason I committed to University of Calgary is because the school has the academic program that I am interested in and it is also one of the top football programmes in the CIS.”

“I am also very excited to be playing for my hometown and have the opportunity to play with my twin brother.”

This past fall, Statz guided Notre Dame Pride of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) to their second consecutive Provincial Tier 1 Championship.  Last spring, the defensive standout was selected as a Boulton Division All-Star for his play with the Calgary Mavericks of the Calgary and Area Midget Football Association (CAMFA). He will be once again reunited with his twin brother at Calgary – defensive back Aaron Statz.
