Junior Varsity tier one Stampeders in first, Bantams, tied for first, both undefeated


Tier one Junior Varsity squad pull out close game in York Region, go to 4 ā€“ 0

The JV1 Stampeders visited the York region Bucs in Newmarket and pulled out another win 32-45 to remain undefeated and on top of the Ontario Football Conference standings.

The scoring was evenly matched in the first half, with the Stamps kicking game as the difference in the score 25- 31, with a field goal and perfect point after conversions. The third quarter was scoreless and the Stamps scored two in the fourth, with the second just inside two minutes, compared to only one score by the Bucs to seal the deal.

The on-the-ground offence was led in scoring by Mercer Timmis, with four touchdowns, Wes Livermore and Jack Gatza added one each. Timmis carried the ball an incredible 32 times for 391 yards. Leigh Szela rushed for 20 yards and Greg Coffin for 16. Andrew Zeibart provided the perfect scoring in the kicking department with a field goal and six conversions.

This game marked the first time this team has had points scored against them. Gatza scored on his interception, Zeibart had a sack, and Jacob Campagnaro a recovered fumble. Addison Olah led the tackles with nine, Zeibart had seven and Lucas Merlin six.

The Junior Varsity tier one team under head coach Sean Williamson, continues its road schedule in London next Saturday against the Forest City Thunderbirds at 1pm on the Westminster Secondary School field.

Junior Varsity team play rival Oakville in Tier two match up, come up short

In a game called with 4:43 on the clock n the third quarter by an injury, the Burlington JV2 team went down to the Oakville Titans 0-42.

The Oakville squad scored on its first possession, marching down the field in six and Ā½ minutes. The Stampeders did not convert for a first down in the first quarter except on an Oakville penalty, However the Stamps found some offence with four other earned first downs in the rest of the game.

The offensive linemen were very strong, providing quarterback Troy Downton time to exercise his passing options. The receivers were subject to triple and quadruple coverage by the Titans on most attempts. With some adjustments, a handful of completions followed, three from Downton on the run, and two complete passes, one each to Jesse Harton and Liam Stokes. The half ended with a score of 0-34.

ā€œItā€™s the first time in my six years with the Stampeders Iā€™ve seen no points on the scoreboard for a Stampeder team,ā€ said offensive co-ordinator Ben Britton. ā€œ There will be big changes to the offence and a dedication to mental focus.ā€ Britton advised the squad.

The defensive effort was lead by inside tackles from Cole Masnaghi, Fox Grant and Travis Dietl.

The hearts of the coaches and players on both teams were with Carson Neddow who was taken directly to hospital via ambulance. The Oakville team was very respectful in staying on the field until their opponent left.

The JV2 team falls to 0 ā€“ 3 while Oakville moves to second in the tier two standings with a 2-1 record. Burlington hosts the 0-3 Sarnia Sturgeons at Notre Dame High School field with a 1pm kick off.

Bantam Stampeders handle York Region Bucs, go to 4 ā€“ 0

The Bantam Stamps beat the York Region squad handily with a 7-35 final score in Newmarket on June 20. The team moves to 4-0 and shares that record with the Twin Cities Predators from Kitchener-Waterloo. The team will have another road game this time against the 3-1 Chatham Cougars with a 3:30pm kick off at the Chatham Kent Secondary School.

The varsity game will follow the bantam game at 6pm when Neil Lumsdenā€™s Stampeders take on the 1-3 Varsity Cougars.
