Kieran has been playing football for six years, starting with the Burnaby Lions and now plays as a defensive end for the St. Thomas More Knights of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BCHSFA).

Kieran has won many awards such as Defensive MVP and two Most Valuable Lineman honours.

A standout moment from last season came from a game against the Terry Fox Ravens.

“The highlight of my previous season was when my Varsity team took on and defeated the Terry Fox Ravens,” the defensive end comments. “Going into the game we were clearly the underdogs and we liked it.”

“On the first play from scrimmage, Noah Usherwood stripped the ball carrier, scooped up the ball and ran in for a ten yard score. From that moment on we knew the game was ours.”

Kieran admires both his mother and sister for their continual support.

“When it comes to academics my sister constantly reminds me that i have to do well or she will eventually get better grades than me,” adds Kieran about his sister Gigi.  “She is always reminding me to hit the gym and focus on the big goal of being a dominant football player.”

“When it comes to my Mom, she serves as my moral compass. She is always influencing me to do well and to try to make a difference in this world.”

Kieran’s father and coach, Dave Ruzycki, have also been supporters throughout all his football endeavours.

“My father is always the guy who stays up late watching my Hudl game film and analyzing my every move looking for mistakes and areas i can work on,” the Burnaby native reflects.  “He has been there for almost all of my football games and I can always hear him yelling at me in the crowd telling me to stay lower than the guy across from me.”

“My junior varsity coach Mr. Ruzycki has been a coach that not only showed me how to be a great football player but also a how to be a true man. He taught me that no matter what happens you must constantly fight back until you have nothing left in the tank.”

As for recruitment process, Kieran is embracing every opportunity and amazed by the whole experience.

“Every coach has been so kind not only to me but to my family as well,” says Kieran, who is considering Western, British Columbia (UBC), Manitoba, Carleton and Guelph.  “Whether it was over dinner or talking at camps the coaches truly cared about me and my family’s well being.”

The Knights’ defensive end has yet to decide what he would like to study after completing high school, but plans to play football and discover his career aspirations in the coming months.

Kieran will be attending football camps in both Canada and the US over the summer while also amping up his training regime.

“The coaches and trainers have amazing training plans that will be good for me to keep getting stronger during the season,” Kieran says. “I have similar plans for the off season training, as well as working out with the Knights and my trainers at Air Raid Academy.”
