Local recruit carries on family tradition at SMU (VIDEO)

Darmouth linebacker joins AUS team’s 2015 class.

Ben Deturbide wants to follow in his family footsteps.

Recently, the 6’1, 240 pound linebacker (middle) from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia committed to the Saint Mary’s Huskies.  Deturbide will join the team for the 2015 AUS season.

“By going to Saint Mary’s, I will continue a tradition, as my parents and relatives are Saint Mary’s alumni,” elaborated Deturbide.

Moreover, academics and proximity played a role in his decision.

“Saint Mary’s is close to home and I would like to study criminology,” said the Nova Scotia linebacker.  “SMU has a great criminology program.”

At a recent team event, Deturbide felt at ease with the Huskies and was energized in the team’s efforts in rebuilding their success.

“When they invited me to attend a recent recruitment dinner,” explained the defensive standout. “I was really impressed.”

“SMU has a great football tradition and the facilities are first class. SMU also made me feel very welcome and I got to meet the coaches as well as the university president. It was a great experience overall.  Saint Mary’s is also in a rebuild and I want to be a part of helping the Huskies return to being a championship team.”

Deturbide suited up for the Prince Andrew Panthers of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL).  This past season, he was selected as a Nova Division First Team All-Star as he guided the Panthers to a postseason appearance in the semi-finals.  The linebacker averaged 17 tackles a game during the season.  He also recorded 14 sacks, two forced fumbles and two recoveries.

“We are extremely happy to add a student athlete like Ben to the SMU football family,” commented Huskies Head Coach Perry Marchese.
