MTA Mounties have their eyes set on new season

The 2016 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) football season will soon be upon the region and the Mount Allison Mounties are ready to go.  After back-to-back AUS Championships in 2013 and 2014, the Mounties lost the Loney Bowl last fall on a last minute field goal.

Much has happened during the Mounties’ offseason, including a change at the Head Coach position. Mount Allison graduate and football alumni Scott Brady took over as head coach in November after Kelly Jeffrey resigned from the position.  Jeffrey is now working as Special Teams Coordinator with the Toronto Argonauts.

When announced as the program’s new coach in November, Brady had this to say
“I could not be more excited to be the head football coach at Mount Allison. This is truly a special opportunity to be the head coach at my alma mater.  I’m excited to keep working with this extraordinary group of young men and together we will continue to build a program that everyone associated with Mount Allison can be proud of.”

Brady has been on the Mounties coaching staff for six years. After a four-year playing career as an Academic All-Canadian, running back/receiver (2006-09), Brady became the defensive back coach and special teams coach in 2010, coaching All-Canadian cornerback Bradley Daye.  In 2011 Brady was promoted to defensive coordinator and has since coached All-Canadian defensive tackle Jacob Leblanc (2012) and All-Canadian free safety Kwame Adjei (2013) as well as 11 Conference All-Stars.

The Mounties graduated a number of key starters in 2015 but with another strong recruiting class and with many young players already in the program, the garnet and gold will open camp with 104 players.  Players have started gathering in Sackville with camp officially set to open on August 27th.

The Mounties will get their first taste of live action on Friday, September 2nd when they travel to Antigonish for an exhibition game against StFX at 6PM.  The two teams will meet again one week later when the AUS regular season opens at Alumni Field on Saturday, September 10th (2PM).
