Université Laval, le 11 août 2011 – Après l’euphorie suscitée par la conquête de la Coupe Vanier sur le terrain du PEPS le 27 novembre dernier, l’équipe de football du Rouge et Or aura comme lourde tâche de demeurer au sommet.

Le camp d’entraînement a été officiellement lancé cette semaine pour les champions nationaux en titre avec les tests physiques et médicaux, et la première sortie des étudiants-athlètes aura lieu samedi après-midi. Quelque 79 joueurs, dont une trentaine de recrues, prendront alors d’assaut le terrain du Stade du PEPS pour le premier entraînement officiel.

Malgré la saison parfaite de 13-0 en 2010, l’entraîneur-chef de la formation lavalloise, Glen Constantin, est formel : les succès de l’an dernier ne comptent plus. « Le changement est inévitable à chaque année, mais le progrès est optionnel. Nous ne sommes plus la même équipe et nos accomplissements sont derrière nous. Il n’y a pas un seul adversaire qui va se laisser abattre à cause de nos résultats passés, donc c’est notre attitude d’ici au mois de novembre qui déterminera si on sera une équipe championne », a commenté celui qui entame sa 11e campagne comme pilote du Rouge et Or.

Ce dernier estime toutefois qu’il possède un groupe de joueurs ayant beaucoup de potentiel. « Ça sonne un peu cliché, mais nous avons un bon noyau de joueurs auquel se greffent de bonnes recrues. »

Des changements sur la ligne défensive

La ligne défensive lavalloise aura un nouveau visage cette année avec les départs de Marc-Antoine Beaudoin-Cloutier et de Philippe Lemire. Le joueur de ligne par excellence au Canada en 2010, Arnaud Gascon-Nadon, de même que Jean-Alexandre Bernier et le joueur de cinquième année Marc-Antoine L.-Fortin seront pour leur part de retour à leur poste. C’est donc à l’intérieur que Glen Constantin et le coordonnateur de la défensive Marc Fortier devront trouver des solutions.

« Ce sont deux gros morceaux qu’on perd », a admis Constantin, qui n’est pas en mesure à ce stade-ci d’évaluer l’impact des recrues à cette position. « Il y a un poste à combler, mais on ne peut pas encore dire s’il le sera par une recrue ou par un vétéran. » Les nouveaux-venus Samuel Hébert (Lévis-Lauzon), Michel Savard (Notre-Dame-de-Foy) et Brandon Tennant (Vanier) seront donc appelés à démontrer leur savoir-faire au personnel d’entraîneurs au cours des prochaines semaines. Hébert, un athlète de 6’1’’ et 250 lb, a été choisi joueur de ligne défensive par excellence du circuit collégial AA en 2010.

Malgré la fin du parcours universitaire de Jean-Philippe Dumas, l’entraîneur lavallois estime qu’il a entre les mains l’un des meilleurs groupes de secondeurs au Canada avec les Frédérick Plesius, Samaël Lavaud et Francis Beaudet. « Le problème, c’est au niveau de la profondeur. Nous pouvons toutefois compter sur deux très bonnes recrues en Mathieu Masseau (St-Jean-Richelieu) et Érik Morin (Champlain-Lennoxville). » Le premier a été élu sur l’équipe d’étoiles de la ligue collégiale AA, tandis que le second était membre d’Équipe Canada junior en 2009.

La ligne tertiaire se verra inévitablement affectée par la perte de deux joueurs sélectionnés sur les équipes d’étoiles canadiennes l’an dernier, soit Maxime Bérubé et Olivier Turcotte-Létourneau. Constantin estime qu’avec les effectifs actuels, il pourrait être plus difficile de remplacer Bérubé. « C’était un capitaine, un leader. Il communiquait beaucoup sur le terrain et c’était un gros morceau. Il faudra se pencher sur cette position lors du camp d’entraînement. Pour ce qui est du poste de demi de coin, nous sommes bien couverts avec Dominique Noël, Maximilien Ducap-Kamara, Christopher Lavaud et Thomas Girard (F.-X.-Garneau), qu’on a recruté cet hiver. » Girard a trouvé refuge sur l’équipe d’étoiles collégiale AAA lors des deux dernières campagnes, en plus d’être sélectionné sur la formation canadienne junior en 2009. Jonathan Laliberté sera de retour à son poste de maraudeur pour sa cinquième et dernière saison avec le Rouge et Or.

Une attaque relativement stable

C’est sur la ligne offensive que le plus gros des bouleversements en attaque aura lieu, alors que les partants Keven Fiset et Hugues Breton ont complété leurs cinq années d’admissibilité. « Il y aura une belle compétition sur la ligne offensive. Jérôme Bilodeau et Ludwig Dolcé font très bien, et nous avons obtenu deux très bonnes recrues en Danny Groulx (Champlain-Lennoxville) et Hugo Desmarais, qui est arrivé l’an passé. Ce sont deux gros bonhommes qui apportent beaucoup de poids à notre ligne, mais ils devront se battre pour gagner leur poste », a indiqué l’entraîneur-chef lavallois.

Les deux quart-arrières Bruno Prud’homme et Tristan Grenon, qui ont tous les deux été utilisés la saison dernière, seront de retour. Olivier Turcotte, qui a joint l’équipe l’an passé et qui a été appelé à sauter sur le terrain en raison de blessures, et Alex Skinner, une recrue provenant de la région d’Ottawa, complèteront le quatuor de pivots à l’attaque.

Ils seront épaulés par une cohorte de porteurs de ballon : Sébastien Lévesque, Pascal Lochard, Guillaume Bourassa et le jeune Maxime Boutin font partie de l’éventail de joueurs à cette position. « L’écurie est pleine et nous sommes bien contents! Nous sommes particulièrement heureux de compter sur la présence de Maxime Boutin, un solide joueur de football qui verra assurément du terrain dès sa première année, notamment sur les unités spéciales », s’est réjoui Constantin.

Le groupe de receveurs ne subira aussi que peu de changements, si ce n’est que le départ de Mathieu Picard. « Nous avons un très bon groupe et nous avons fait un bon travail de recrutement avec l’arrivée de joueurs extraordinaires comme Matthew Norzil (Vanier), un excellent joueur de football qui se battra pour un poste de partant assez rapidement. Il y a aussi Charles Lambert qui pourra faire de belles choses pour nous. » Seront également de retour les Julian Feoli-Gudiño, Seydou Junior Haïdara, Victor Tremblay, Guillaume Rioux, Mathieu Bouvette, Yannick Morin-Plante, Jérémie Chrétien, Patrick Lavoie et Adam Thibault.

Enfin, un botteur de la trempe de Christopher Milo, évoluant maintenant avec les Roughriders de la Saskatchewan, ne se remplace pas du jour au lendemain. Constantin n’est cependant pas inquiet, puisque deux athlètes sont prêts à prendre la relève, dont Mathieu Boudreau, un produit des Élans de F.-X.-Garneau.

Le Rouge et Or disputera une rencontre hors-concours le 28 août à 13 h contre les Marauders de l’Université McMaster. Les Lavallois lanceront leur campagne le 3 septembre contre Concordia dans la métropole. Le match d’ouverture locale de la saison 2011 est prévu le 10 septembre contre les Carabins de l’Université de Montréal au stade du PEPS.
