Ontario (Peel): Angels aim for perfection in face-off with dangerous Spirit

Joan of Arc QB Hobbs key in Week Four’s marquee match-up with St. Marcellinus.
St. Joan of Arc tries to maintain a perfect record when the Angels host the St. Marcellinus Spirit in the Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association on Friday.
The Angels (2-0) have had little trouble in the season so far, thanks in large part to Nate Hobbs’ spectacular play.
In his team’s Week Two outing against perennial contender Lorne Park, the star quarterback had two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores in the Angels’ 37-10 rout of the Spartans.
Angels coach Tom Pianta called Hobbs “a player other teams have to worry about.” With the opposition taking notice, the quarterback is up to the challenge.
“If we just keep working hard and if we keep doing what we’re doing, we got a lot of different looks we can give them [the opposition] so I don’t think anyone can stop us,” Hobbs said.
Despite the fiery start, Pianta played down his team’s spotless record.
“The season’s still early,” he said. “We know we have a lot of competition in this [South] division. We appreciate the bye week, but we know the top of the competition is extremely good in our division.”
Pianta said he likes how the team is able to make in-game adjustments. Against the Spartans, the Angels used a 23-0 second half to break away from a close affair.
“We improved throughout the game. We just got to improve at starting the game better and with more intensity,” he said.
St. Marcellinus (2-1) has had an up-and-down campaign so far, bookending a defeat to Our Lady of Mount Carmel with victories over St. Joseph and Meadowvale.
The Spirit enter Friday’s game with a rediscovered offense and virtually in survival mode, needing to win their remaining games to give them a fighting chance for a playoff spot.
In the day’s other South division game, St. Francis Xavier (1-1), fresh off an upset over the Spartans on Oct. 5, visits winless St. Joseph (0-3).
On Saturday, Meadowvale (1-2) and Lorne Park (0-2) battle to keep their season alive. Mount Carmel (3-0) gets a bye this week.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
