OVFL: Junior Varsity Markham Raiders face tough test vs. Oshawa

The Markham Raiders have a tough task ahead of them, facing a strong Oshawa Hawkeyes team this weekend on the heels of a 57-28 Week 1 loss to the Cumberland Panthers.

Both the Raiders and Hawkeyes like to run the ball. In Week 1, the Raiders threw the ball 12 times for 56 yards, while the Hawkeyes aired it out just four times for 24 yards. On the ground, the Raiders ran 22 times for a whopping 307 total yards, while the Hawkeyes ran it 35 times for 226 yards.

Bucs Running Back Tyler Munro inflicted most of the damage to the Panthers’ run defence in Week 1, leading the province with 189 rushing yards last week and found the end zone once. Anthony Marini also had a good game, chipping in 89 yards. Logan Bodley lead the way for the Hawkeyes last week, rushing for 122 yards and a touchdown.

But while the Raiders allowed 57 points in Week 1, the Hawkeyes shut out the Etobicoke Eagles 32-0. There’s no denying the Panthers have a strong team and an explosive offence, but the Raiders will have to be a lot better on defence to keep the game close versus Oshawa.

If the Raiders can shut down the Hawkeyes’ running attack, they might be able to run away with a victory if Munro and Marini combine for another elite game on the ground.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
