OVFL RECAP (Varsity – Week 1): Ravens defence shuts down Jr. Stangs, Ford, Braccio & Dicks shine on opening weekend

Spring football is underway in Ontario.

The Ontario Varsity Football League officially began this past weekend with eight games.

No shutouts were registered in Week 1 of varsity play.  Kingston Grenadiers, Ottawa Myers Riders, Sault Ste. Marie (SSM) Sabrecats, York Region Lions, defending provincial champions Essex Ravens, Oshawa Hawkeyes and Niagara Spears all posted their first wins of the season.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Football Conference (OFC) will come on board this upcoming week as their league begins play for the 2016 campaign.

Here are results for WEEK 1 OVFL  Varsity Division

KINGSTON GRENADIERS 37, CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 7:

On Saturday afternoon at Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational School, Tanner DeJong completed 13 passes in 15 attempts for 216 yards and four touchdowns as the Kingston Grenadiers defeated Cumberland Panthers 37-7.

Nik Daniele-Reyes tallied two majors for the victors while DeJong and Jacob Magee each added a score.

Harry Robinson rushed for 110 yards on nine carries and Caleb Goodfellow racked up 110 yards on 13 carries for the Grenadiers. Additionally, Grant LeGood had 91 yards on four receptions.

Shawn Miller was successful on a 37 yard field goal attempts and added five PAT’s.

As for the Panthers, Tavon Hibbert scored the lone touchdown for the team and had 97 yards on four receptions.  Pivot Drew Garby completed 11 passes in 29 attempts for 170 yards and a touchdown.  Zachary Batal was successful on the conversion attempt in the loss.

Jean Paul Cimankinda

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 28, TORONTO THUNDER 6:

At Birchmount Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Jean-Paul Cimankinda scored two touchdowns and rushed for 108 yards on 13 carries as the Ottawa Myers Riders cruised to a 28-6 victory over hosts Toronto Thunder.

Owen Clement talled a major and amassed 101 yards on four receptions in the win.  Moreover, Jerrad Kyle added two PAT’s for the Myers Riders.

#CFCOPC pivot Brayden Lassenba completed eight passes in 16 attempts for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

On defence, James Peter led the way for the Myers Riders with one solo and one assisted tackle as well as five solo and an assisted tackle.

Sheder Fervius added a major and 155 yards on seven receptions for the Thunder in the loss.

SSM Sabrecats

SAULT STE MARIE (SSM) SABRECATS 30, ETOBICOKE EAGLES 20:

On Saturday evening at Father Henry Carr CHS, Tristan Marshall tallied two majors and rushed for 175 yards on 22 carries as SSM Sabrecats got past hosts Etobicoke Eagles 30-20.

Dalton Toppan scored two touchdowns and had 109 yards on five receptions in the win.  Isaac Belsito added 97 yards on five receptions for the Sabrecats.

Pivot Michael Byron completed 15 passes in 25 attempts for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Darius Richer was successful on four conversion attempts in the game.

Michael Reid led the Sabrecats defence with an interception, six solo and four assisted tackles.  Furthermore, Jacob Fecteau recorded a sack as well as four solo and six assisted tackles.

As for the Eagles, a silver lining in their loss was the performance of receiver Keegan Dicks as he scored two touchdowns and amassed 153 yards on four receptions.

Justice Allin also tallied a major and rushed for 77 yards on 19 carries for the Eagles.  Max Melville completed 10 passes on 28 attempts for 231 yards.

On defence, Cameron Buck caught an interception and registered four solo tackles.

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 35, HAMILTON IRONMEN 11:

At McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday evening, Jacob Spencer had 4.5 sacks 5 solo tackles 1 ta and a fumble recovery for 3 yards. as the Cambridge Lions thumped hosts Hamilton Ironmen 35-11.

Quarterback Jackson White completed 19 passes in 26 attempts for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Austin Papalazarou had 139 yards on nine receptions for the Ironmen.  Additionally, Alexander Di Pietro tallied the lone major as well as completed 16 passes in 25 attempts for 193 yards.  David Benedetti was successful on a 27 yard field goal in the loss.

YORK REGION LIONS 16 CORNWALL WILDCATS 9:

On Saturday evening at St. Maximillian Kolbe High School, the York Region Lions escaped with a 16-9 victory over visiting Cornwall Wildcats.

For the Wildcats, Jordan Millward added a 28 yard field goal in the loss.

ESSEX RAVENS 17, LONDON JR. MUSTANGS 9:

At TD Waterhouse Stadium on Saturday night, Braden Braccio talled a major and rushed for 176 yards on 22 carries as the defending Provincial Champions Essex Ravens clipped hosts London Jr. Mustangs 17-9.

#CFC100 Jacob Savoni rushed for 86 yards on 15 carries in the win.  Vito Pipitone added a 29 yard field goal as well as two PAT’s.

Chase Boycott led the Ravens defence as he caught an interception as well as an assisted and seven solo tackles.

OSHAWA HAWKEYES 50, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 14:

On Saturday night at York University, Dylan Hutcheson caught an interception as well as racked up seven solo and eight assisted tackles as the visiting Oshawa Hawkeyes breezed by the host Metro Toronto Wildcats 50-14.

As for the Wildcats, Jordan Ottey tallied a major off a 110 yard kickoff return.  Joshua Knight added two PAT’s. On defence, Daiquane Buchanan caught three interceptions as well as registered four solo and three assisted tackles.

Niagara vs Mississauga 2016

NIAGARA SPEARS 55, MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 12:

At Kiwanis Field on Saturday night, Tre Ford completed 17 passes in 27 attempts for 328 yards and four touchdowns as the Niagara Spears crushed the visiting Mississauga Warriors 55-12.

#CFCOPC Jack Gelbart scored a touchdown and racked up 119 yards on four receptions in the win.  Ted Njeru added 86 yards on five carries for the Spears.  Owen Charnock added five PAT’s.

Tyrell Ford caught two interceptions as well as registering three solo and three assisted tackles to lead the Spears defence. #CFCOPC Jack Andrews racked up seven solo and eight assisted tackles in the victory.

Kian Schaffer-Baker scored a pair of touchdowns and had 112 yards on nine receptions for the Warriors.  #CFCOPC pivot Alex Lavric completed 11 passes in 22 attempts for 140 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
