OVFL: Varsity Bucs reeling after losses both on the field and off

The Newmarket Varsity Bucs are spinning in turmoil.

Days after their season opening 50-0 loss to the Metro Toronto Wildcats, their Head Coach Mike Lepore tendered his resignation due to personal and business commitments.

The Bucs could not be reached for comment as of Friday, but assistant coach Andrew Edge appears to have taken the reigns and will lead the team into their Week 2 matchup against the Niagara Spears.

Edge has a tough task ahead. The Varsity Bucs have won only one of their nine games since joining the OVFL last season, and will have to keep the team together after such a disheartening loss in Week 1.

Tough starts are seemingly inevitable for new teams to the OVFL, but the Bucs came into the 2012 season with high hopes after bolstering their roster in the off-season. Nothing seemed to go right in the season opener though.

The Bucs allowed 126 yards on three interception returns alone. They surrendered 177 yards and three touchdowns through the air, and another 154 yards with four touchdowns on the ground last week. In comparison, Bucs rushers only managed to gain 66 yards from scrimmage.

Rookie QB Mac Scott threw for 132 yards, and the team will try to rally around their mildly effective passing game against the Niagara Spears, who are coming off a 34-17 loss to Mississauga in Week 1.

The showdown happens tonight at 8 p.m. at Kiwanis Field.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
