OVFL: Varsity Hamilton Ironmen Look To Avenge Championship Loss

The Hamilton Ironmen have reason to be optimistic heading into the 2012 season. Just a year removed from their appearance in the OVFL Championship, the team has retained many of their players from the 2011 roster, while gaining some much needed depth from the graduating class of juniors. To say that head coach Rob Underhill is excited about this year’s squad would be an understatement.

“I like the overall athleticism of our team. Our receivers and our DBs are the most talented group that we’ve seen in a while and it will allow us to do a lot of different things on both sides of the ball,” beamed Underhill.

A total of 22 players on the 58 man roster are getting their first taste of football at the varsity level, but Underhill believes that if anything, this will give his team a significant advantage as the season wears on.

“We have an extremely competitive schedule and it will be hard for everyone to stay healthy,” he stated, “if our staff can develop our number twos and threes to the point of being game ready we will be tough team to play down the stretch.”

If the team’s depth doesn’t give opposing coaches fits, the defense certainly will. The Ironmen’s front seven is a big, experienced group, boasting four returning starters from last season. Underhill believes that the Ironmen should be one of the stronger teams on the defensive side of the ball.

Then there’s the quarterbacking…the position that is arguably the most important on the field is one of the Ironmen’s greatest strengths heading into the 2012 campaign. The dynamic duo of pivots Alex Hill and Kyle VanWynseberghe will be pivotal for the team’s success. Their coach has nothing but high praise when asked about his quarterbacks.

“The return of talented QB Alex Hill and the rise of JV QB Kyle VanWynseberghe gives us the most depth at the pivot spot in the team’s history,” said Underhill.

After a trip to the championship game last season, the Ironmen know that nothing is guaranteed. If they want to get back to the big show, a lot of work still needs to be done. However if anything is guaranteed, the Hamilton Ironmen sure are going to be fun to watch this year.
