Peterson named York’s Associate Offensive Coordinator

TORONTO, Sept. 18 ā€“ York University Lions head football coach Warren Craney announcedĀ on ThursdayĀ that Kamau Peterson has been named the full-time associate offensive coordinator for the program.Ā

Peterson was previously a guest coach with the program in 2012, working with the receivers, and most recently worked alongside Craney as the receivers coach at the IFAF U19 world championships in 2012 and 2014. He has been with the team since training camp opened in August, working mostly with the receivers.Ā

ā€œHaving the opportunity to hire someone with Kamauā€™s experience is tremendous for our program,ā€ said Craney. ā€œHe brings tremendous coaching expertise to the skill positions and is an excellent recruiter with plenty of connections within football. After working with him on Team Canada, I knew he would be a good fit with us.ā€Ā

Peterson was a three-sport student-athlete at the University of New Hampshire, competing for the Wildcats in football, basketball and track and field. After being selected sixth overall by the Calgary Stampeders in the 2001 Canadian Football League (CFL) Draft, he went on to a stellar professional football career in the CFL. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound receiver played for four teams over nine seasons in the league and won the 89th Grey Cup in 2001 as a rookie with the Stampeders.Ā

He recorded two 1,000+ receiving yard seasons in his career and in 2008 was named a CFL West all-star and earned the most outstanding Canadian award while with the Edmonton Eskimos. He also played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.Ā

ā€œIā€™ve had plenty of opportunities to coach since retiring from the game, and after getting to know Warren over the years it became clear to me that York was the place for me at this time. Iā€™m a ā€˜road-less-travelledā€™ kind of guy and I want to be able to impact lives and mentor young men, and Iā€™m looking forward to working with the student-athletes here at York.ā€Ā

In addition to coaching, Peterson is the founder and CEO of Playmaker U, which runs age-appropriate group workouts focusing on core strength, agility, speed and coordination development for athletes looking to enhance their training.Ā

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
