PREVIEW (RSEQ 1x): Mayor’s Cup on the line in Lennoxville

SHERBROOKE  – The ninth edition of the Mayor’s Cup will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 1 on Coulter Field on the Bishop’s University Campus.  The No. 9 Sherbrooke Vert et Or make the cross-town trek to face the Bishop’s Gaiters.  The RSEQ University Football kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Saturday will mark the first official meeting between the two Eastern Townships teams in 2014.  Bishop’s (1-6) is eliminated from playoff contention but want to hold onto the annual trophy that they won a year ago in dramatic fashion at the University of Sherbrooke.  The Vert et Or (4-3) will look to win back the cup for the seventh time in its nine year existence.  Sherbrooke is also battling for playoff position.  A victory on Sunday means that the Vert et Or guarantee themselves third place in the RSEQ.

Bishop’s will wrap-up their 2014 campaign on Sunday regardless of the outcome.  For this sixth time this season and fourth time at home they face an opponent in the CIS top-10. Spirits remain high with the Lennoxville squad as they want the Mayor’s Cup to stay at Bishop’s.

“This is a great tradition,” said Kevin Mackey, head coach of the Gaiters. “It’s nice for football in the community.  This is a bowl game, the Mayor’s Cup is on the line and we want to keep it.”

Sherbrooke Mayor Bernard Sevigny will be on hand to present the trophy to the winning squad. In its eight-year existence Sherbrooke has won it six times and the Gaiters twice, last year and in 2007.  Saturday will mark just the third time the cup is competed for on Coulter Field; Bishop’s won in 2007 and the Vert et Or in 2010.

The drama of a year ago will be tough to beat.  Bishop’s topped Sherbrooke 22-21 after the Vert et Or missed a 30-yard field goal on the last play of the game.  Bishop’s returner O’Shane Daley then punted the ball out of the end zone to preserve the Gaiters victory.  The win also marked the second victory of 2013 by a single point over Sherbrooke and propelled Bishop’s into the CIS top-10.
