RECAP (AUS): Mounties continue to roll; X-Men improve with decisive win(stats)

The CIS 8th ranked Mount Allison Mounties celebrated Homecoming weekend with a decisive 39-8 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Saturday afternoon at MacAulay Field in Sackville.  The raucous hometown crowd was on their feet early and often in the 1st quarter as the Mounties built up an 18-0 first quarter lead and never looked back.  The score was 32-2 at halftime and from there the 2013 AUS Champions cruised to their 8th straight win in AUS regular season and playoff action.

The Mounties offense struck less than 3 minutes into the game when Christian Plante powered his way into the end zone from 2 yards out.  Plante, a 4th year defensive lineman for the Mounties was given the ball for first of 5 touchdowns the home team scored on the day.  The Mounties struck again 5 minutes later when Kyle McLean sprung free on a fake field goal attempt and ran the ball in from 17 yards out.  Kicker Ryan Lambert put the ensuing kickoff through the Saint Mary’s end zone to make it 15 nothing.  The Mounties would add another rouge and Saint Mary’s team safety to make it 18-0 by the end of the first quarter.

The Mounties kept the offense moving in the 2nd quarter, mostly on the strength of freshman running back Chris Reid’s 192 yards rushing.  After some good work to get the Mounties within striking distance, Reid scored from 1 yard out to make it 25-0. Saint Mary’s found the scoreboard by forcing Mount Allison to a team safety with 8 minutes gone in the 2nd quarter.  Chris Reid then scored his 2nd touchdown of the day, this time scampering 19 yards for the major.

In the third quarter Christian Plante scored his 2nd touchdown of the day when he punched it in from 1 yard to make it 39-2.  The Huskies would respond with a touchdown of their own when Ben Rossong hit Lukas Snyder for a 28 yard strike with 10 minutes remaining.  From there, the Mounties ran out the clock on their 3rd straight victory of the young AUS season.

Reid was the leader on offense for the Mounties with his 192 yards on the ground.  Starting quarterback Brandon Leyh was 4-5 for 72 yards on a day where strong winds kept the game mostly on the ground.  Leyh gave way to 4thyear Mountie QB Alex Field in the 4th quarter.  Jacob Gesse had 49 yards on 10 carries for the Huskies while Melvin Abankwah had 24 yards on 12 carries.  Ben Rossong was 11-23 for 133 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

On defense, the Mounties had 9 sacks to go along with 3 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery.  Special teams also chipped in with a blocked punt from Matt Rose.  Michael Bohan, Kwame Adjei and Andrew Klain all had interceptions while Jacob LeBlanc led the team with 5.5 tackles and 1 sack.  For Saint Mary’s Jonathan Langa had 8.5 tackles to lead the way defensively.

Fans were treated to a halftime special appearance by members of the 1984 Mounties that won the Atlantic Bowl and played in the Vanier Cup.  More than 30 members of this celebrated Mounties team were back on MacAulay field to relive the magical run of ’84.

The Mounties now sit at 3-0 in first place in the AUS while Saint Mary’s falls to 0-3 and sits in last place.  The Mounties travel to Quebec to play Bishop’s next Saturday night, September 27th at 8PM (ATL) while Saint Mary’s hosts Concordia in Halifax.

STFX-ACA14

WOLFVILLE  – Demetrius Ferguson put the game out of reach with a 50 yard interception return for a touchdown to give the StFX X-Men a 38-16 lead late in the third quarter.  The X-men, who lost last weekend by a late fourth quarter rally by the Mount Allison Mounties, improve to 2-1 with an eventual 38-29 win over the Acadia Axemen.

Under nine minutes in the first quarter, Acadia’s Bobby Troopscampered in for a three yard touchdown to cap a ten play 85 yard drive to give the Axemen an opening quarter lead.

But X-man Jordan Catterall, who posted a game high 114 yards in receiving on only three receptions, tied the game at seven with a 51 yard reception for the first of five StFX majors.

With less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Jeremy Ford added a 30 yard field goal to give the X-Men a 10-7 lead heading into the second frame.

An 18 yard toss from starting StFX pivot Tivon Cook to Keon Hughes pushed the lead to 17-7 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Cook finished the day 15 for 29 for 277 yards in the air including three touchdowns.

A snap over Jeremy Ford’s head that rolled into the end zone gave the Axemen a two-point safety two minutes into the second quarter, but StFX would respond again following a 32 yard StFX punt return by Demetrius Ferguson plus an Acadia objectional conduct penalty that would spot the ball on the Axemen’s 39 yard line. Runningback Ashton Dickson, who posted a game high 105 yards in rushing for the X-Men, stretched the lead to 24-9 with a 29 yard touchdown.

Acadia’s Eli Prochnau jumpstarted the Axemen at 11:25 in the second quarter with a 71 yard punt return for a touchdown, but X-Man Jordan Catterall sparked an 84 yard drive with a 54 yard reception that eventually setup StFX’s fourth major of the day when Jeremy Steeves pulled in a two yard reception to give the X-Men a 31-16 lead heading into the intermission.

Ferguson’s interception return for a touchdown ended the StFX run late in the third quarter. Acadia scored early in the fourth on a one yard rush by Bobby Troop – second touchdown of the day – that ended a six play, 79 yard drive. Ryan Begin added two field goals late in the final quarter to bring the Axemen to within nine points, but StFX prevailed with a 38-29 win.

Axemen starting pivot John Shaw was replaced Darcy Lavoie in the second half. Lavoie was 14 for 25 attempts for 188 yards and two interceptions, while Shaw was 8-13 and 60 yards passing and one interception.

Statistically the game was close but the scoreboard showed a different story. The Axemen created 330 yards offence while StFX edged Acadia with 352 yards. Penalties played a factor at times with Acadia landing 13 penalties for 108 yards. The Axemen also held onto the ball for 32 minutes compared to StFX’s 25, but big plays made the difference – both on defense and offense.

The X-Men improve to 2-1 while Acadia drops to 1-2. The undefeated Mount Allison Mounties will hold onto first place with a 39-8 win over Saint Mary’s, while StFX sits in second place. Acadia will travel to Sherbrooke next Saturday in the RSEQ-AUS interlock to take on the 1-2 Vert et Or
