RECAP: Laval dominates, sets multiple records…Hugo Richard clinches the Hec??

Laval University, October 19, 2014 – Much of the record book at Laval was rewritten Sunday afternoon at TELUS-Université Stade Laval, in a 64-3 Laval win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in front of 13,242 spectators.

First, Laval improved two CIS records, the number of consecutive wins (24) and the number of wins in a row at home (69).

Freshmen Quarterback Hugo Richard also set some individual records. Richard accumulated 506 passing yards, a new team record that surpassed 416 yards set by Mathieu Bertrand in 2003 and also threw seven touchdown passes in a game, one more than in 2007 Benoît Groulx; and it is a brand new RSEQ record.

The Laval pivot also broke a team record with his 19th touchdown pass of the season. Groulx had 18 in 2009 Finally, Richard and Maxime Boutin equaled the record for the longest pass / reception with a 103 yarder in the first quarter.

Antony Dufour also enhanced the record Rouge et Or for more yards on a kickoff return with 102.

Head coach Glen Constantin praised the work of his quarterback after the game. “There have been many great quarterbacks who have gone here, either Mathieu Bertrand, Benoit Groulx, and Bruno Prud’homme. To have as many yards and as many touchdowns, while keeping an extraordinary ratio of interceptions, that’s a big accomplishment, especially for a rookie,” commented Constantine.

“At first, we scored points, but the execution was not necessarily to the point, especially in the first quarter. Things are back to normal afterwards, especially in the second half. I’m happy with the collective effort of the entire game. ”
The Rouge et Or will play its last two regular season games on the road. First, it will be at McGill next Friday night to face the Redmen. Then on Saturday, November 1, Laval return to the mainland and cross swords with the Carabins.

DUBE’S RECORD SILVER LINING IN GAITERS LOSS TO ROUGE ET OR

QUEBEC CITY – First-year kicker Vincent Dube set a Bishop’s Gaiters modern-day record with an 81-yard punt in the first quarter of Sunday’s RSEQ University Football game in Quebec City.  It was the lone bright spot for the Gaiters who fell 64-3 at the hands of the No.1 Laval Rouge et Or.

Laval’s victory extended a pair of CIS records they own; 24 straight wins and 69 straight triumphs on their home turf. The nation’s best team proved yet again why they have been a unanimous number one selection in each of the polls this year.

On a blustery afternoon in the provincial capital, Dube (Montmagny, Que.) had his best day in purple.  He punted 10 times averaging 46.8 yards including the Bishop’s record 81 yarder at the 2:13 mark of the first stanza.

Hugo Richard (St-Bruno, Que.) led the way for Laval.  He set an RSEQ record with seven touchdown passes while accumulating 507 yards through the air.  Nine different Rouge et Or caught a combined 24 completions from Richard while he attempted 31 passes and was intercepted once.

The hosts dominated every aspect of the game. They outgained the Gaiters 628 yards to 111.  Their scoring plays included a 103-yard screen pass and a 102-yard kickoff return to pay dirt in front of the boisterous 13, 242 spectators at Stade Telus.

“I think this opened a lot of eyes,” said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey.  “We are a young team that will learn. Some of our younger guys had the chance to play in this atmosphere and gained some valuable experience.”

Bishop’s (1-5) has a quick turnaround after falling to the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or (6-0) on Sunday. They will host the No. 5 Montreal Carabins (5-1) in their penultimate game of the 2014 regular season campaign.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Coulter Field.
