Top-ranked Laval wins 25th straight game, offensive prowess proves too much for Redmen

MONTREAL – QuarterbackΒ Hugo RichardΒ passed for 379 yards, three touchdowns and a couple of CIS rookie records as No.1-ranked Laval cruised to a 53-14 victory over McGill in CIS football at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.
Β
It marked a CIS record 25th consecutive victory for the Rouge et Or, who improved to 7-0 on the season and the 10th straight loss for the Redmen (0-7). Laval led 20-0 after the opening quarter, 29-0 at the half and 40-0 after three.
Β
The lone bright spot for McGill’s offence was sophomoreΒ Raphael Casey, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound running-back, who rushed for a career-high two touchdowns and 61 yards on 11 carries.
Β
Richard, who completed 24 of 39 attempts, set a CIS single-season rookie record with 22 TD passes and established another mark for most passing yards in a season by a freshman with 2,440 in seven contests. He surpassed the mark held by Sherbrooke’s JΓ©rΓ©mi Roch, who benefited from an expanded nine-game RSEQ schedule in 2011 to rack up 2,383 yards.Β Β Β Β Β Β Β
Β
Richard generated an offence that produced 30 first downs and 608 yards, compare to 195 by the Redmen, who conceded a whopping seven safeties, which ate up 89 yards of real estate. Richard hooked up twice with fullbackΒ Felix Faubert-LussierΒ for TD catches of 17 and 20 yards to put Laval ahead 18-0 before the game was six minutes old. He also found wide receiverΒ Antony DufourΒ for a 10-yard TD toss to make the score 39-0 in the third quarter.
Β
The two other Laval TDs came on their ground game, withΒ Christopher AmoahΒ rushing nine times for161 yards and a TD andΒ Guillaume BourassaΒ collecting a team-high 10 carries for 58 yards and a TD.
Β
Rounding out the scoring for the Rouge et Or was kicker Boris Bede, who tallied nine points on five conversions, a 37-yard field goal and rouge on a missed 24-yarder.
Β
FreshmanΒ Joel HouleΒ was the lone quarterback to dress for the injury-plagued Redmen, who suited up 26 first-year players and never previously dressed only one pivot in the post-war era. Houle, who was sacked four times, completed 17-of-30 passing attempts, for 227 yards, no TDs and no interceptions.
Β
Defensively, McGill rookieΒ Karl ForguesΒ registered a game-high 11.5 tackles, including 11 solos, two of them sacks. The 5-foot-9, 200-pound linebacker also had a forced fumble and a knockdowns. He leads the RSEQ conference with 66 tackles in seven games, including six quarterback sacks.
Β
The division-leading Rouge et Or wrap up conference play versus Montreal on Nov. 1.
Β
McGill (0-7) will close out their 134th season at Concordia with the 28thΒ annual Shrine Bowl game, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. , which generates funds for the Montreal Shriner’s Hospital for Children. A press conference about the event is scheduled to be held at the hospital on Oct. 29 at 11:30 a.m.
Β
REDMEN RAP: It was the last home game for eight McGill seniors, including injured LB Zach Lord, RECΒ Pascal Tshilambo, DBΒ Eran Gerstein, SFTYΒ Simon Lamontagne, OLFrederic Methot, REC J.P. Paquette, DLΒ Olivier Cain-TremblayΒ and KΒ Nils Jonkmans.

Carabins clinch home playoff game

University of Montreal will play a semi-final game at home after aΒ 56-8 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters Saturday afternoon. The Carabins set four offensive records in the victory, which is their sixth consecutive. Β The total offense for Montreal wasΒ 572 yards toΒ only 210 for the Gaiters (1-6) who are now officially eliminated from the playoffs.

“We are very pleased with the effort of our players and the way we played today”, said head coach Danny Maciocia Carabins. “There are still adjustments to be made, but we areΒ now preparing as if we were in the playoffs. We wanted to have the support of our fans for at least one playoff game. ”

The duo of quarterback Gabriel Cousineau and receiver Mikhail Davidson was again a spark in the first half. Davidson became the most prolific receiver in teamΒ history inΒ number of receptions and receiving yards, breaking his mark of 622 achieved in 2012. Β A TD reception from 26 yards to open the scoring and score his seventh of the season, beating the team record by Olivier Pellerin in 2005.

“These records are a combination of the excellent work of our coaches and our players”, said Davidson. “It’s been four years since Gabriel and I are working together every week. Our coaches give us the opportunity to demonstrate our expertise and the fruits of our efforts are harvested. He was offered another good performance and we must continue to play this way. ”

Cousineau’s 14th touchdown pass in 2014 Β allowed him to beat the team record dating back to 2012, held by his quarterbacks coach, Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze.

“It’s always good to show the coach what you can accomplish,” Cousineau saidΒ after the game. “Mikhail has never played as well, but there are several talented receivers, which makes our unpredictable air attack. This is the records, but it is important we win, I would be nothing without my teammates, that our offensive line continues its excellent work. ”

GAITERS ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFFS

SHERBROOKE, Que. – The No. 4 ranked Montreal Carabins ended any hopes the Bishop’s Gaiters had of a late season push to the playoffs.Β  Montreal topped the Gaiters 56-8Β on SaturdayΒ in Lennoxville. It was the penultimate RSEQ University Football contest of 2014 for Bishop’s.

Fifth-year receiver Nathan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) scored the Gaiters lone touchdown, a 26-yard reception on a pass from Travis Eman (Brampton, Ont.)Β 8:21Β into the third frame but it wasn’t enough as the visitors paced themselves to a comfortable advantage.

Montreal jumped out to a 14-0 lead halfway through the first frame. Bishop’s looked to respond but was forced to settle for a 36-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide resulting in a rouge.Β  That was all the offense the hosts could manage in the first half. Montreal exploded for 22 second quarter points and grabbed a 36-1 halftime advantage.

The Gaiters were able to contain Montreal in the third frame, outscoring them 7-2, however Montreal scored two majors in the final quarter and added a field goal and a rouge for a final score of 56-8.

β€œThe score says it all,” said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey.Β  β€œWe were missing four players on the defensive line. I thought our young guys played well given the circumstances. Next week we will evaluate where we are at. There is a trophy on the line and we want to keep it here.”

Bishop’s (1-6) has one contest remaining against their cross-town foes, Sherbrooke on Saturday, November 1 on Coulter Field.Β  The Mayor’s Cup will be on the line for the two teams going in different directions.Β  Sherbrooke (4-3) beat Concordia (4-3) 29-0Β on SaturdayΒ for their second consecutive shutout.Β  The Vert et Or will clinch third place in the RSEQ with a win or a Concordia loss to McGill (0-7)Β on Saturday.Β  The Gaiters will look to retain the Mayor’s Cup and finish the season on a high note.
