RECAP (OUA): Marauders tame Lions; Lancers defeat Warriors; Gaels shutout by No.6 Gryphons; Mustangs pick up Homecoming win (stats & VIDEO)

The McMaster Marauders spoiled the party at York’s Homecoming, defeating the Lions 49-2 to remain undefeated at 4-0 in the OUA. The Lions remain winless at 0-4.

The Maroon got on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter on a sensational 27-yard touchdown by Dan Petermann, who had to reverse his field after being cut off by the York defense and dashing across the field into the endzone.Ā  Tyler Crapigna added a 20-yard field-goal and the Marauders carried a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, McMaster got its running game going and behind Chris Pezzetta and Wayne Moore started to control the ball on the ground.Ā  Moore scored a 4-yard touchdown, and Pezzetta hit paydirt on a 25-yard scamper to build the lead up to 25-0.Ā  A touchdown pass from Marshall Ferguson to Ben O’Connor late in the quarter and three single points on Crapigna kick-offs put McMaster in front 37-0 heading into intermission.

The second half saw both teams going deep into the depth chart and the Lions got on the scoreboard when McMaster conceded a safety from deep in its own zone.Ā Ā  The Marauders got a six-yard scoring run by Wayne MooreĀ  and led 44-2 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw both teams struggle offensively and the Marauders were called for several penalties that killed any flow in the game.Ā  York was forced to concede a safety rather than punt from its endzone and Tyler Crapigna added a 41-yard field to complete the scoring.

With his three field-goals, Crapigna now has 75 for his career and is just two short of tying the OUA career record of 77.

McMaster finished with 502 yard of total offense, while the defense limited York to only 182 yards in total.Ā  Keldyn Ahlstedt and Joe Richardson had interceptions for the Maroon.

The Marauders will now prepare to face Queen’s for the annual Homecoming game, next Saturday, September 27, with kick-off at Ron Joyce Stadium set for 1 p.m.

Guelph_vs_Queens -2014

GUELPHĀ Ā ā€“ The Queen’s Gaels (0-4) fell to the No.6 Guelph Gryphons (3-1) 66-0Ā on SaturdayĀ afternoon in Guelph.

Guelph put up 32 points in the opening half and Queen’s was unable to get themselves back into the game. The Gaels were led byĀ Derek WigganĀ (Toronto) who finished with five solo tackles all coming for losses, two sacks and a fumble recovery.

The Gryphons were led by Jazz Lindsey and Robert Farquharson who combined for 213 yards rushing. Lindsey rushed for two and threw for three scores while Farquharson added one on the ground.

In the first quarter the Gryphons opened the scoring when they had to settle for a field goal after taking back-to-back penalties while in the Gaels end. Queen’s marched down the field themselves and looked to respond with a field goal of their own but a botched snap forced a Gaels turnover.

Lindsey and Farquharson marched Guelph down the field and Lindsey finished off the play rushing for an 11 yard score to go up 10-0.

The Gaels looked to respond andĀ Billy McPheeĀ (Burlington, Ont.) made his way through Guelph tackles to mid-field on a big play for the Gaels to gain nine yards. A third down fake-punt rush put Queen’s into Guelph territory but they were then forced to punt on third and long shortly after.

The Gryphons closed the quarter with another Lindsey rushing touchdown.

Queen’s looked to get some momentum going in the second and Alex Zuyls (Toronto) hauled in a 22 yard pass for the Gaels but once again the team was forced to punt after Guelph was able to get to Gaels quarterback McPhee.

Guelph closed out the half with 15 more points to hold a 32-0 lead.

In the second half Guelph scored twice early in the third quarter and added twenty more points the rest of the way to shutout the Gaels 66-0.

First-year quarterbackĀ Nate HobbsĀ (Mississauga, Ont.) saw action late in the game and finished with two completions for 15 yards.Ā

The shutout marks the first time since 2005 that the Gaels have been unable to put point on the board in a game.

The Gaels return to actionĀ next SaturdayĀ when they travel to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders atĀ 1pm.

GuelphĀ ā€“Ā Quarterback Jazz Lindsey threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the No. 7 Guelph Gryphons to a 66-0 victory over the Queenā€™s Gaels in front of 7,855 excited Homecoming fansĀ on SaturdayĀ afternoon at Alumni Stadium in Guelph. The Gryphons move up to 3-1 on the season while the Gaels drop to 0-4.

Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) completed 23 of his 35 attempts for 345 yards and three touchdowns, and would also rush for 52 yards and two touchdowns, with his longest run being 16 yards.

The offence was firing on all cylinders in their Homecoming game of the 2014 season, racking up 679 total yards including 353 through the air and another 336 on the ground. A total of six different Gryphons found the end zone.

Rob Farquharson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) would lead the offence rushing for 170 yards and one touchdown. Farquharson would average 8.8 yards per carry and a long of 25 yards.

Alex Charette (St. Catharineā€™s, Ont.) would lead the receivers with 10 receptions for 137 yards and one touchdown. Aā€™Dre Fraser (Halifax) would be close behind with eight receptions for 127 yards and one touchdown.

Cameron Walker (London, Ont.) would lead the defense with eight unassisted tackles and two sacks for a loss. Iain Hutchison would be close behind with six unassisted tackles and one assisted for a total of 6.5.

The Gryphon defence came out strong, shutting down the first drive of the game with a big sack on Queenā€™s quarterback Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.). Ryan Nieuwesteeg (Niagara Falls, Ont.) would set the Gryphons up with excellent field position on the 39-yard line in Queenā€™s territory on the return. Guelph would be unable to take advantage of the field position after an illegal motion call, and Daniel Ferraro (Mississauga, Ont.) would make a 40-yard field goal, making it 3-0 for the Gryphons early in the first quarter.

The Gryphon defence would continue to pin down the Gaels, forcing them to convert on third and longs. The Gaels would try to fake a field goal, but would be unsuccessful, setting the Gryphons up deep in their own territory. Big runs by Rob Farquharson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had Guelph able to battle out of their own half. A connection with Aā€™Dre Fraser (Halifax, NS.) would set the Gryphons up on the 10-yard line, with Jazz Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) keeping the ball to run it in for the first touchdown of the game to make 10-0 after the extra point from Ferraro.

Guelph would score again in the first quarter after a pass to Alex Charette (St. Catherines, Ont.) would move the Gryphons up to the 16-yard line. The Gaels would draw a roughing the passer call which would move the Gryphons up to the one yard line, with Lindsey scoring another touchdown after a quarterback keep, making it 17-0 after the extra point.

In the second quarter, a return by Nieuwesteeg would put the Gryphons in a good position on the field again. Farquharson would get the ball up to the 27-yard line. Lindsey would fake the hand off to Farquharson, connecting with Lucas Spagnuolo (Grimsby, Ont.) in the end zone to make 24-0, with the extra point. The Gryphons would find the end zone again before the end of the quarter after Farquharson rolled through defenders for a touchdown. After a rouge point by Ferraro, the Gryphons would end the first half up 32-0.

Gryphons continued with their momentum with a long pass from the 40-yard line to Aā€™Dre Fraser from Lindsey. With the extra point, the touchdown would set Guelph ahead 39-0 at the beginning of the third quarter. When they regained possession, the Gryphons put together yet another touchdown drive after starting at the 43-yard line. Johnny Augustine (Welland, Ont.) would find the end zone, making it 46-0 with the extra point.

Queenā€™s would start the fourth quarter with a fumble, with Iain Hutchison recovering taking the ball to the 23 yard line. The Gaels would hold the Gryphons out of the end zone and Gabriel Ferraro would score a rouge point making it 47-0.

The Gryphons would score another touchdown after recovering a Queenā€™s fumble, with Charette catching a long pass over the middle in the end zone, making it 54-0 with the extra point by Gabriel Ferraro (Mississauga, Ont.). Gabriel Ferraro would kick for a field goal and a rouge point in the fourth quarter making it 58-0. His brother Daniel Ferraro would kick for another rouge point after a long punt to make it 59-0 heading towards the end of the game.

Gryphon player Brandon Gordon (Toronto, Ont.) would put together a few big runs to move the team down to the 11-yard line towards the end of the quarter. It would be Augustine who would put the last touchdown on the board making it 66-0 after the extra point.

The Gryphons will hit the field again on Saturday October 4thĀ against the Windsor Lancers in Windsor with the game set to kick off atĀ 1 p.m.Ā This coming week is a bye week for the Gryphon squad.

Philippe NDjore 2014

LONDON Ā ā€“ In front of a packed house of 11,489 fans on Homecoming Weekend, the Western Mustangs football team rolled through the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 63ā€“15 for their first home victory of the season.

With the win the CIS No. 3 Mustangs move to 3-0 on the season and sit tied for second in the OUA, while the Varsity Blues move to 1-3 on the year.

The Mustangs offence, working in and out of the read-option, marched the ball downfield for a flawless opening drive that was capped off by a seven-yard touchdown run by fifth-year running back, Garret Sanvido.

But, even as the Mustangs poured it on, sloppy play and turnovers were the story in the early stages of the game.

The Mustangs offence turned the ball over five times in the first two quarters but still managed to tack on 36 first-half points.

Despite turnovers providing opportunities for the Varsity Blues offence, the Mustangs defence was poised as they held their opponents to only eight points in the first half, including an impressive three-play goal line stand in the second quarter.

In the end, the Mustangs offence was too much for the Varsity Blues. The Mustangs racked up 804 total yards and converted all six of their trips to the red zone, compared to 223 yards of offence for Toronto.

Will Finch, Mustangsā€™ third-year quarterback, had a roller coaster of a game. Finch threw four interceptions but managed to produce a big game both in the air and on the ground.

ā€œI made some bad reads and some bad throws and I just need to get better on that stuff. You just need to throw it out of your mind. You canā€™t dwell on it,ā€ said Finch.

The Mustangs quarterback completed 25-of-37 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 68 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns.

Finch was happy with the teamā€™s win but felt that he has to play better.

ā€œIā€™m pretty hard on myself, so whenever I overthrow someone or under throw someone I just get down on myself,ā€ Finch said. ā€œI need to get better, but as a team, it was a great team victory.ā€

After struggling to find his receivers downfield for the better part of the first quarter, Finch settled down. He connected with fourth-year slot back, Matt Uren, for the seven-yard score to give his team a commanding 29-point lead early in the second quarter.

ā€œWe made the difficult throws today, but sometimes we just need to make the easy ones,ā€ said Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall.

The Mustangs veteran pass catchers had solid performances. Uren hauled in eight passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns while fifth-year receiver Brian Marshall had six receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Even though the Mustangs had trouble protecting the ball, Greg Marshall thought his team played well and was happy with his ground game.

ā€œWe ran the ball well. Theyā€™re a pretty good front. I thought we did a good job up front running the football,ā€ he said.

Yannick Harou, the Mustangs third-year running back, and Garret Sanvido split the bulk of the Mustangs carries. Harou rushed 13 times for a team-leading 96 yards and punched in a two-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Overall the Mustangs recorded

Marshall said that even with the win at home, there is still plenty of work to do for next weekā€™s game.

ā€œI think we need to get more consistent on special teams, I think that we gave them a couple big returns. They gave us a lot of stuff because they were worried about deep stuff and we didnā€™t take it as efficiently as we could have,ā€ Marshall said.

The Mustangs now get set to take on the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, September 27. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Waterloo, and fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv, listen on CHRW Radio, or on CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor calling all the action.
