RECAP: PFC (7) Hilltops, Huskies & Colts all win; BCFC (10) Sun, Raiders & Huskers win

PFC WEEK 7:

Week 7 of the PFC saw two upsets and a blow out as the Saskatoon Hilltops, Calgary Colts and Edmonton Huskies claimed victory.

The biggest upset of the weekend was in Regina as the Colts beat the Thunder 20-13.  Colts head coach Matt Blokker got a small measure of revenge after losing the Canadian Bowl on that very field last November.

The Colts threw the ball extremely well as quarterback Brett Hunchak finished 19 of 29 for 254 yards and found Jevon Cottoy in the end zone.  Cottoy led all receivers with 136 yards on seven catches.  Xavier Ramsey chipped in with four catches for 50 yards.

On the ground Cam Fox ate up some valuable yards and time on the clock carrying 22 times for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Kicker Marshall Broom connected on two field goals, including a 45 yarder.

Defensively the Colts were solid allowing just two points in the second half and created six turnovers.  Colton Burr made game high eight solo tackles and intercepted a pass, while Jakub Jakoubek made five tackles and assisted on seven others.  He also recovered a fumble and knocked a pass down.

Keiko King, Joel Johnson, Logan Wall and Tariq LaChance also recovered fumbles and Chris Friesen intercepted a pass.

Saturday night the Colts (2-4) will stay on the road and tangle with the Edmonton Wildcats (3-3) at 7:00pm.

The Regina Thunder fall for just the second time this season, both games on home turf.

They outgained the Colts with 338 offensive yards, most of which through the air.  Quarterback Jaeden Marwick played just the first half and finished 18 of 23 for 169 yards and threw a touchdown.  He was knocked out of the game, so in the second half Spencer Mack was 10 of 19 for 103 yards, and had a key fumble late in the game.

Both Preston Bews and Kasim Ocaya each caught nine balls, Bews for 109 yards and Ocaya for 81.  Thomas Bresciani hauled in the lone touchdown, a five yard reception.

The Thunder ground attack didn’t have much luck with only 87 yards.  Matt Frass leading the way with 35 yards on six carries.

Two missed field goals hurt the Thunder as William McGee connected on one of three attempts.

On the defensive side Brandon Whitehouse led the club with six solo tackles and sack.  Marcus Hall had the lone interception, while Dustin Erbach jumped on a fumble and tallied four solo tackles.  Linebacker Brett Selinger chipped in with five solo tackles.

The Thunder (4-2) will travel to Edmonton to face the Huskies (2-4) on Sunday.

The Saskatoon Hilltops blasted the Winnipeg Rifles at home on Sunday, recording their fourth win of the season in a 48-23 victory.

The Rifles actually outgained the Hilltops 417-382, but the home side used a balance attack to have their success.

Quarterback Jared Andreychuck was solid finishing 14 of 23 for 213 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Evan Kopchynski.   He spread the ball to eight different receivers, Evan Turkington and Chad Braun each hauling in four passes.

The ground game was firing as the PFC leading rusher Wayndel Lewis rushed 13 times for a game high 66 yards and two touchdowns.  Logan Fischer also punched it in the end zone on two carries and 59 yards.

25 Hilltop defenders made at least one stop on Sunday and three players made interceptions.  Tom Schnitzler picked off a pass and returned it 20 yards for a major.  Blake Herman also had a pick six, but for his he had to rumble 50 yards to the house.  Arnold Osam also intercepted a pass.

Aaron Evans, Schnitzler and Hermann each had a sack and Bobby Ehman recovered a fumble.

The Hilltops (4-2) will face the Rifles (3-3) again on Sunday, but this time in Winnipeg in the last half of a home and home.

The Winnipeg Rifles tallied over 400 yards of total offense, mostly due to the passing game.  Quarterback Tyler Vieira completed 19 of 27 for 273 yards and threw three touchdown passes, all of them caught by Niclas Bembenek.  Kurt Goodrich hauled in a game high nine passes for 105 yards.

The ground game recorded 191 yards, led by Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette and his seven carries for 73 yards.  Joel North carried 12 times, but only managed 39 yards.

Defensively the Rifles forced two interceptions as Jason Kelly records his Conference leading fifth pick, while Jordan Gauthier also intercepted a pass.  Brooks Falloon tallied five solo tackles and Joshua Onyebuchi had four.

The Rifles (3-3) will get their opportunity for revenge immediately when they host the Hilltops (4-2) on Sunday afternoon.

Back on Saturday night in the Battle of Edmonton Part 2, the Huskies claimed a 50-36 victory, avenging last weekend’s loss to the Wildcats.

This week the offense tallied 428 yards, led by the one man wrecking crew Jimmie Airey.  He caught six passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns.  Then on the ground, he had a game high 127 yards on 11 carries and scored.  He recorded 251 all-purpose yards.

Quarterback Trevor Erdmann finished 14 of 28 for 249 yards and threw three touchdowns.  Airey caught two of them and Marc LaPlante caught a 57 yard touchdown pass.

Kicker Jonathan Heiderbrecht was a perfect 4-4 in field goal attempts.

The Huskies defense even got in on the scoring as Jassen Brown recovered a fumble and returned it 24 yards for a TD and had three sacks. Branden Modin made seven solo tackles and had a pair of sacks; while Brandt Kolybaba tallied a game high nine tackles.

The Huskies (2-4) will host the Regina Thunder (4-2) on Sunday.

The Edmonton Wildcats did see a number of terrific individual efforts on Saturday night in their third loss of the season.

Offensively David Adebayo rushed 17 times for 123 yards and tallied a pair of touchdowns.   Brad Quartel gobbled up six passes for 187 yards and a score.

Quarterback Jordan Olson was 13 of 27 for 283 yards and threw the TD pass to Quartel.

Kicker Ideen Samadi was two of three in field goal attempts, including nailing one from 43 yards out.

The Cats defense put points on the board as well after Ryan Doram intercepted a pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown.  Linebacker Brett Morrow led the charge with seven solo tackles and Jalahni Knorren collected five.  Mike Hanson and Dylan Wright each had a sack and Rashaad Robinson and Wright each recovered a fumble.

The Wildcats (3-3) now prepare for a date with the Calgary Colts (2-4) on Saturday night in Edmonton.

BCFC Week 10 recap 2014

BCFC WEEK 10:

With Week 10 of the BCFC season in the books, the playoff picture is starting to become clearer as the Okanagan Sun, VI Raiders and Valley Huskers each recorded wins.

The Sun captured first place and home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a 37-20 victory over the visiting Langley Rams on Sunday.  The Sun “D” and Special Teams again stood tall in the victory.

The defense held the Rams running attack to just 75 yards and caused 10 turnovers.  Linebacker Ron Mwamba was a man on mission intercepting a pass, recovered a fumble, led the club with six solo tackles and knocked a pass down.  Matt McConnell, Nick Schroeder and Layne Hull also recovered fumbles.

Wes Geisler intercepted a pass, as did Robbie Yochim, his fourth of the season.  Dexter Janke and Jeff Mock clipped in with three tackles each.

The “D” also created three turnovers on downs.

Yochim, who set a Canadian Junior Football League record last week with three punt returns for touchdowns, was at it again.  Sunday afternoon the fifth year veteran returned two kick-offs for touchdowns, of 105 yards and 95 yards.

Offensively the Sun running attack was simply awesome. Alex Bradley rushed 20 times for 154 yards and scored on a 50 yard dash.  The BCFC’s leading rusher Dillon Fortune carried six times for 38 yards.  Kasey Russell scored his seventh major of the season on a one yard plunge.

In all, the run game collected 207 yards, while the passing attack gathered 112 yards with Josiah Joseph finishing 4 of 10, but threw two interceptions.  Jesse Kendall and Kyle Patchell each made a critical catch of 45+ yards.

The Sun (8-1) will now host the Kamloops Broncos (6-3) in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at the Apple Bowl.

The Langley Rams had a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but scored just 10 more points the rest of the way, losing for the third time this season.

Their passing attack was solid as Jordan McCarty, starting just this third game this season, finished 18 of 39 for 239 yards and threw a pair of touchdowns.  His favourite target was Dan English who made four catches for 107 yards and a major.  Malcolm Williams hauled in three passes for 55 yards and a score.

On the ground, the Rams didn’t have much success.  The reigning Offensive Player of the Week, Nathan Lund carried 10 times for 38 yards, while Jordan Traversy rushed four times for 37 yards.

Kicker Steve Thomas added to his Conference leading points, nailing two field goals, each from 23 yards away.

The defense recorded four turnovers as John Beckerleg intercepted his Conference leading fifth pass and Ethan Schulz had one of his own.  Clovis Lumeka jumped on a fumble.

Brandon Klein and Alex Agnoletto were solid on the Rams line each making seven solo tackles.  Dylan Roper recorded his 10th sack, leading the BCFC.

The Rams (6-3) will conclude their regular season on Saturday night at 7:00pm in Chlliwack against the Valley Huskers (1-8).

 

The VI Raiders nailed down the fourth and final playoff spot on Saturday night with a 45-15 victory over the Kamloops Broncos at Hillside Stadium.

The Raiders executed a well balanced attack with 307 yards on the ground and 234 through the air.

Michael Ritchott carried a game high 12 times for 113 yards and a major.  Taylor Flavel sprinted 75 yards for a touchdown, and Nathan Berg scored his sixth touchdown of the season.

Quarterback Liam O’Brien completed 12 of 20 for 239 yards and threw three touchdowns.  Marshall Cook caught three balls for 91 yards, while Dustin Rodriguez, Arthur Fabbro and Flavel all hauled in majors.

On the defensive side the Raiders forced four turnovers.  Dexter Shea intercepted two passes and had a pair of sacks.  Nigel Henry picked off a pass and led the club with four solo tackles and had a sack.  Ash Gayat recovered a fumble.

The Raiders (4-5) will conclude the regular season on Saturday afternoon at home when they host their Island rivals, the Westshore Rebels (2-7) at 1:00pm.

The Kamloops Broncos fall for the second time this season at home dispute collecting 338 yards through the air.

Quarterback Steve Schuweiler finished 23 of 35 and threw a pair of touchdown strikes.  Both majors were caught by Devin Csincsa who collected 162 yards on eight catches.  Both Derek Yachison and Jesse Neufeld made four catches.

On ground the Broncos didn’t have much success compiling 61 yards, led by Jacob Palmarin’s 46 yards on seven carries.

Defensively the Broncos were led by Caleb Goudie and his four solo tackles.  Aaron Smit forced the lone turnover, picking off a pass.

On Sunday the Broncos (6-3) will visit the Okanagan Sun (8-1) to conclude the regular season.

 

The Valley Huskers collected their first win of the season, beating the Westshore Rebels 39-28 on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskers played their best game of the year getting scoring from all three phrases of the game.  The offense collected 406 yards, as quarterback Dylan LaPrairie finished 12 of 23 for 304 yards, threw three touchdown passes and scored one with his feet.  He found Tyron Ledingham five times for 135 yards and a major, while both passes Keenan Godden caught were for touchdowns.

On Special Teams kicker Dan Erickson connected on a 32 yard field goal.

Defensively Jesse Deering picked up a fumble and rumbled 28 yards for a touchdown.  Jesse Smith also recovered a fumble while Daniel Mills picked off a pass.  Dylan Boykowich had an impressive game with seven tackles and a sack.

The Huskers (1-8) will conclude the regular season on Saturday night when they host the Langley Rams (6-3).

The Westshore Rebels outgained the Huskers by over 100 yards of total offense but couldn’t make them on the scoreboard.

Quarterback Hunter Lake had another terrific game with his arm and his legs accounting for all four touchdowns.  He finished 23 of 47 for 349 yards and threw two touchdown passes.  Both Jordan Rodinsky and Griffin Dear each caught a major, while Bryce Mosely had eight catches for 102 yards.

Lake rushed 13 times for 101 yards and scored two more majors.

On the defensive side of the ball, Chris Pastro and Tanner Rodinsky each made four tackles and Braeden Swatez intercepted a pass.

The Rebels (2-7) will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they make a visit to Nanaimo to face the Raiders (4-5) at 1:00pm.
