RECAPS (AUS/RSEQ): Mt. A lone AUS winner; Laval sets new CIS record; Dessureault powers Stingers; Sherbrooke over Acada; Carabins smother X [stats]

(LENNOXVILLE, QUE.) – The Mount Allison Mounties remain the only unbeaten team in the AUS after an impressive 26-3 road victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Lennoxville, Que. on Saturday night.

The win came as a result of a strong overall performance by the Mounties who were led by a defence that forced six Bishop’s turnovers and gave up only three points on the night.

The Mounties were also strong on special teams, winning the field position battle. The Mounties offence moved the ball well, led once again by the strong running of freshman running back Chris Reid.

The visiting Mounties wasted little time getting going as they used a bad snap on a Bishop’s punt to give them good field position early. Ryan Lambert was able to connect from 37 yards to give the Mounties an early 3-0 lead.

On the Gaiters’ next possession, all-Canadian safety Kwame Adjei intercepted a Shane MacDonald pass and returned it all the way to the Bishop’s 26-yard line. Three plays later, running back Chris Reid found the end zone from seven yards out giving the Mounties a 10-0 lead.

Bishop’s responded with a field goal of their own in the firstΒ quarter and were threatening with another short field goal attempt but Mounties special teams came up with a field goal block to keep the score at 10-3 at the end of the firstΒ quarter.

Ryan Lambert would add a secondΒ field goal half way through the secondΒ quarter, this time from 27 yards to make it 13-3 for the Mounties.

After a Lambert missed field goal made the score 14-3 for the Mounties, Mount Allison’s specials teams went back to work. This time, fifth-year MountieΒ Josh BlanchardΒ returned a punt 43 yards to the Bishop’s 19-yard line.

On the next play, Mounties quarterback Brandon Leyh found Rod Joseph in the end zone from 19 yards out to make the score 21-3.

On Bishop’s next possession, second-year Mountie Devante Sampson intercepted MacDonald and returned the ball 46 yards to the Gaiters’ five-yard line. From there, the Mounties would eventually settle for another Lambert field goal to stretch their lead to 24-3.

The Mounties defence also got in on the scoring, forcing a Bishop’s team safety to round out the scoring at 26-3.

Leading the way defensively for the Mounties was Sampson with two interceptions and two tackles. Adjei chipped in with an interception while freshman Nate Rostek led the team with 7.5 tackles and freshman Shaun Robinson had 5.0 tackles including a sack.

Offensively, Chris Reid was once again the story, carrying for 175 yards on 30 carries and adding one touchdown. Brandon Leyh was 11-for-24 for 140 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Josh Blanchard had six catches for 85 yards while Rod Joseph had two catches and one touchdown.

The CIS No. 8-ranked Mounties now sit alone in firstΒ place in the AUS with a 4-0 regular season record.

Mount Allison will see action next when they travel to Halifax to take on the Saint Mary’s Huskies Saturday, Oct. 4Β at 2 p.m.

Laval Β – The Laval Rouge et Or Laval has established a new Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) record on Saturday, gaining their 22nd consecutive win, 70-3 over the McGill Redmen in front of 14,981 spectators Laval University’s TELUS Stadium.

Laval had tied the CIS record last week, which previously belonged to the McMaster Marauders which was achieved in the 2011-2012 seasons. It was also the Rouge et Or, who ended the Marauders streack in the 2012 Vanier Cup Final.

Rouge et Or Head Coach Glen Constantin also continued his run of success at home, winning a 67th consecutive game. Laval has not lost at home since a 14-13 setback against the Montreal Carabins on September 19, 2004.

Despite the convincing victory, Constantin was not totally satisfied with his team’s conduct, particularly because of the large number of penalties.

“There has been a lack of focus and intensity on our part,” said Constantin. β€œThis is something dangerous we have to address.”

As for the record set by today’s group, the coach did not think much of it.

“It’s flattering, but it’s not our goal,” he said simply.

After being stopped for the first time since he joined the CIS ranks, Hugo Richard rushed the ball himself into the end zone for a nine yard touchdown score midway in the first period to give Laval the 7-0 lead.

The Rouge et Or increased its lead less than two minutes later when Guillaume Bourassa sprinted 63 yards for the major. Then, after a safety was conceded by Redmen, they got on the scoreboard when Nils Jonkman added a 25 yard field goal. After 15 minutes, it was 16-3 for the Rouge et Or.

After Boris Bede was successful on two field goal attempts and the Redmen conceded two more safeties Laval’s lead increased to 26-3 late in the second quarter. Then with less than a minute remaining in the half, Richard connected with Charles Lambert for a 22 yard touchdown.

At halftime, the Rouge et Or led the Redmen 33-3.

Julian Bailey added six more points on the board when the Hugo Richard spotted him in the end zone midway through the third quarter. Then, towards the end of the quarter, Bede added another field goal, his 16th of the season in as many attempts.Β  The Rouge et Or had a commanding 43-3 lead after three quarters.

Richard scored his second major of the game down on a six-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Richard escaped pressure, deviated to the right and narrowly crossed the goal line. It was 50-3 at that point for the Rouge et Or.

Freshman Christopher Amoah then took advantage of a McGill defense gap to spin 50 yards and score his first career CIS touchdown. Β After the conversion, another safety and a single by Bede, Laval was ahead 60-3.

Bede added his fourth field goal of the game and Lambert added a six yard rushing touchdown to round out the scoring and seal the victory 70-3.

Richard completed his work day with 21 completions on 33 attempts, 280 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Felix Faubert-Lussier led all receivers with five catches for 70 yards. Bailey had four catches for 73 yards and 1 touchdown.Β  LambertΒ  had 4 catches, 55 yards and one touchdown.

On the ground, Bourassa accumulated 173 yards on 13 carries, including 107 in the first quarter alone. Christopher Amoah had 88 rushing yards on four carries, while Maxime Boutin got 75 yards in seven carries.

Defensively, Shayne Gauthier registered three solo and three assisted tackles, including 1.5 for losses. Michael Langlois also had a strong game with two tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumblr recovery and a blocked kick.

Laval residents will return home next week to welcome the Concordia Stingers at Laval University’s TELUS Stadium on Sunday October 5th.Β  Kickoff is 1:00PM.

(SHERBROOKE, QUE.) – The Acadia Axemen fell to a 1-3 regular season record today after a 48-10 loss the Sherbrooke Vert et Or.

The Axemen were out-gained 516-164 net yards on offence. Sherbrooke improves to a 2-2 record with their fourth win against Acadia in as many meetings – the last time in 2008.

The Axemen, missing starting running back Thomas Troop for the second week in a row, were unable to keep possession of the ball, accumulating 25 minutes of possession and only 15 first downs compared to the Vert et Or’s 29 first downs.

Sherbrooke struck first on their opening drive when they put together an eight-play, 52-yard drive that resulted in a 13-yard field goal. Another field goal that came off of an interception on Acadia’s 15-yard line, nudged the score up to 6-0 in the first seven minutes of play.

The Vert et Or’s third possession resulted in another field goal by Mathieu Hebert, pushing the lead to 9-0 with 4:44 remaining on the clock in the first quarter.

Finally Sherbrooke was able to penetrate the end zone on an eight-play, 77-yard drive that was spearheaded by a 22-yard reception by Sebastian Blanchard and a 16-yard reception by David Dumas-Goulet, both from starting pivot Jeremi Roch.

At 16-0 in the second quarter, Acadia’s Ryan Begin finally got the Axemen on the scoreboard with a 44-yard field goal. The Axemen closed the margin to 16-10 on a one-yard dive by Zack Clarke that completed a 66-yard drive and closed the first-half scoring.

The Vert et Or would score 32 unanswered points in the second half.

A Mathieu Herbert rouge in the opening four minutes of the second half was the start of an onslaught of Sherbrooke points. David Dumas-Goulet led the Vert et Or with two touchdowns including a two-yard run and eight-yard reception for touchdowns. Herbert would add another field goal and rouge while teammates Jean-Robert Moisan and Vince Gaudreau added touchdown receptions from Roch.

Roch finished the game with 280 yards in passing and was 25-for-39 with one interception and three touchdown tosses. Acadia quarterback John Shaw posted 13 completions on 25 attempts and two interceptions for a total of 90 yards. Brian Jones had a team-high 47 yards on seven receptions. The running game had a total of 83 yards, with Eli Prochnau running 35 yards on three carries in the wildcat quarterback position. The Axemen’s total offensive output was the lowest this season.

Acadia returns to the field next Saturday Oct. 4 when they visit the 2-2 StFX X-Men at 2 p.m in Antigonish.

Concordia defeats SMU 2014 Interlock

Halifax – The Concordia Stingers topped the Saint Mary’s Huskies by a score of 63-7 on Sept. 27, 2014 at Huskies Stadium in Halifax in both team’s only Atlantic-Quebec interlock game this season.

Subway player of the game Francois Dessureault (Drummondville, Que.) went 19-for-25 for 221 yards and two touchdown passes, adding another touchdown on a one-yard run in the thirdΒ quarter. Jamal Henry (St. Constant, Que.) had seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown, while Keegan Treloar (Brandon, Man.) made seven extra point kicks, three field goals, and a single to lead the Stingers’ offence. Eric Noivo (Kirkland, Que.), returned a 38-yard interception for a touchdown and Arto Khatchikian (Dollard des Ormeaux, Que.) registered 5.5 tackles and a sack to power the Concordia defence.

The Stingers accumulated 457 total yards compared to the Huskies’ 62. The first quarter proved to be a major turning point in the game. Huskies quarterback Ben Rossong (Sackville, N.S.) threw three interceptions in the first 11:14 of the game, which helped Concordia jump out to an early 35-0 lead, and never looked back.

The Stingers added to that lead when Saint Mary’s kicker Chase Kodejs (Bedford, N.S.) conceded two safeties to give Concordia a 39-7 lead at halftime.

Clay Matthews-Reid (Oshawa, Ont.) gave the Huskies their only major of the game when he returned a 60-yard interception to the end zone in the second quarter. Jonathan Langa (Etobicoke, Ont.) had 10 tackles to lead Saint Mary’s defensive efforts.

Derek Pisani (Newmarket, Ont.) had 12 carries for 43 yards and Mohamed Abdallah (Edmonton, Alta.) amassed two grabs for 17 yards in the Huskies’ offensive effort.

Saint Mary’s next game is versus the Mount Allison Mounties on Oct. 4 at 2 p.m., while Concordia’s next game is against the Laval Rouge et Or on Oct. 5.

The Montreal Carabins took their first trip in four years to the Maritimes and recorded their fifth historic shutout Saturday afternoon in a 44-0 Β win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

This is the third consecutive victory for the Carabins, all by a margin of at least 25 points. Β The Carabins now boast a record of 3-1.

“We had a good performance in all three facets of the game, especially on defense when we faced one of the best running backs in the country in Ashton Dickson,” said Carabins Head Coach Danny Maciocia. “Our young offensive line also did a good job again.”

“This trip was a success. ”

“We had a great week of preparation and were surprised early in the game with the defense,” added linebacker Byron Archambault (Security and Police Studies). “We demonstrated the maturity to come out hard despite all the distractions that may cause such adjustments.”

The Carabins opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. After a few good runs, quarterback Gabriel Cousineau (HEC Montreal, Administration) connected with Philip Enchill (Health and Physical Education) for a 14 yard touchdown score. Β In addition to a safety conceded by the hosts, rookie kicker Louis-Philippe Simoneau (Industrial Relations) scored the other nine points in the first half with 29, 16 and 40 yard field goals, bringing the score to 18- 0.

After halftime, Simoneau returned right where he left off from in the third quarter, this time adding a 42 yard field goal. Cousineau then experienced his best moments of the game. After two passes to Enchill, he completed two more to Mikhail Davidson (Economics), including a 22-yard touchdown.

Cousineau gave way early in the fourth quarter after completing 25 of his 34 passes for 286 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also threw an interception. Meanwhile, St.FX pivot Tivon Cook amassed 154 passing yards by completing 12 passes on 25 attempts, in addition to throwing two interceptions.

“Penalties prevented us from having rhythm in the first half,” said Cousineau. “But we kept our composure and was able to make the right adjustments.”

After a safety, Djonathan Buissereth (Economics) intercepted a Cook pass before sprinting downfield Β for a 40 yard touchdown to make the score 37-0. The Carabins scored another touchdown on the very next kick on an unusual play. After seeing the ball bounce, Byron Archambault has recovered it and made a lateral pass to Anthony Coady (Health and Physical Education) who fled on thirty yards into the end zone.

“Coady was two or three yards from me and looked me in the eyes,” recalled Archambault. Β “I immediately understood he wanted the ball.”

Simoneau completed the scoring with his fifth field goal – Β a 32 yard attempt. Β This was the first time he was in uniform for the team.

“It was not easy for the last two or three weeks for Louis-Philippe as he was not used,” said Maciocia. “But he worked hard and he collected the fruits of his efforts today.”

The Carabins finished the game with 444 yards gained as opposed to the X-Men’s 173 yards. Dickson, who is ranked second in the CIS in yards per game, was limited to 30 yards on seven carries.

The Carabins will be back home next Saturday, Oct. 4th in their only game of the season against the Sherbrooke Vert & Or.
