RECAPS (RSEQ) Montreal offense dominates; Stingers stay undefeated; Laval sets more records [stats]

MONTREAL — Gabriel Cousineau passed for 278 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the No.5-ranked Montreal Carabins defeated McGill 43-17 in RSEQ football before 4,800 at Stade CEPSUM, Friday.

It was the 16th straight win for Montreal over McGill, dating back to a 58-0 Redmen shutout on Oct. 7, 2002.

Cousineau, who directed an offence that racked up 543 yards of net offence, completed 18 of 22 pass attempts, including a pair of TD tosses to running back Sean Thomas-Erlington. He also hooked up with receiver Mikhail Davidson on a 54-yard scoring play.

The Carabins ground attack amassed 290 yards, including 71 from running back Manuel Crisi-Lauzon, whose two-yard TD scamper gave Montreal a 33-10 lead at halftime. Nicolas Dubeau scored the other Carabins major on a four-yard run.

McGill trailed 26-0 before breaking the goose-egg at 11:42 of the second quarter when rookieĀ Moy McDonaldĀ hauled in an 18-yard TD pass from freshmanĀ Joel Houle, who was making his first career start in the absence of injured seniorĀ Dallon Kuprowski.

Houle, who was sacked eight times, completed 11 of 24 attempts for 103 yards and no interceptions. He was shaken up briefly in the fourth quarter and replaced by rookiePierre-Luc Moquin, who was 3-for-4 passing, including a four-yard TD strike to freshmanĀ Simon Gingras-Gagnon.

Montreal (2-1) will make the long trek to Antigonish, N.S., next week to play St.FX (1-1) on Sept. 27. McGill (0-3) will head to Quebec City to meet division-leading Laval (2-0) the same day.

BASKETBALL/

Laval – The Laval Rouge et Or took advantage of their visit to Lennoxville to erase some marks and tie a Canadian team record in a 72-15 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters.

It was theĀ 21stĀ consecutive victory for the Rouge et Or, which is the highest in CIS history and now tied with the McMaster Marauders. The Rouge et Or (3 0) will have the chance to to take over the record next Saturday when the McGill Redmen visit the Laval TELUS Stadium.

Boris Bede also put his name in the Laval record books. His eight field goals in as many attempts has erased the old mark of seven set by Christopher Milo at Concordia on September 20, 2008. With 32 points, Bede also has the the second best performance in the history of RSEQ.

The Gaiters pulled within 18-15 early in the second quarter; however at that point, the Laval offense turned it on for 646 total yards and 28 first downs compared to 299 yards and 17 first downs for Bishop’s.

The chemistry between quarterback Hugo Richard and fullback Felix Faubert-Lussier was evident on the field. Faubert-Lussier caught eight passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns. In his third career game, Richard came up just short of 9 yards away from the team record of 416 in a game, which is held currently by Mathieu Bertrand. The Rouge et Or pivot of the Rouge et Or completed 22 of 34 passes, including three in the end zone, for a total of 407 yards before being pulled late in the fourth quarter.

On the ground, Christopher Amoah led his team with 91 yards on nine carries, while Guillaume Bourassa and Gabriel Gladu-Fortier fought their way into the end zone. Defensively, the star was Vincent Chabot as he caught two interceptions one of which he converted for a 38 yard touchdown. Jean-Philippe Bolduc had four solo tackles.

Bede boots his way past the Gaiters

SHERBROOKE Ā ā€“ Laval kicker Boris Bede was 8-for-8 on field goal attempts en route to a 72-15 Rouge et Or victory over the Bishopā€™s Gaiters in their home opener of the 2014 RSEQ University Football seasonĀ on Saturday.

For Bishopā€™s highlights came early as they grabbed an 8-7 lead in front of the purple faithful. Running back Ronlee King-Fileen (Toronto) scored the Gaiters first touchdown halfway through the first quarter on a seven-yard swing pass from quarterback Shane McDonald (Uxbridge, Ont.). McDonald later connected with fifth-year receiver Nathan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.)Ā 2:03Ā into the second frame to give the Gaiters life as they cut the visitors lead to 18-15 at the time.Ā  This came after Bede (Toulon, France) connected on his first three field goals of the day.

Laval exploded for 28 second quarter points and grabbed a 43-15 halftime lead. In the second half the two-time defending Vanier Cup champions and nationā€™s top team rolled to a 72-15 victory.

Bedeā€™s eight successful field goals is a CIS record for a non-overtime game. He connected on attempts of 15 and 25 yards in the first quarter; 21, 28, 37 and 38 in the second stanza; he added a 28 yarder in the third and 15 yarder to open the fourth. His 32 total points is the eighth most ever in a single game. The rest of his scoring came on six converts and a pair of rouges. He also averaged 55.8 yards on five punts.

McDonald finished the game 16-for-31 for 231 yards, two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Heather caught four passes for 96 yards and the major while King-Fileen finished with 54 rushing yards and 29 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Bishopā€™s is next in action on homecomingĀ Saturday, September 27Ā as they host the Mount Allison Mounties on Coulter Field atĀ 7 p.m
