Montreal, October 3, 2015 – Two Sherbrooke Vert et Or Β touchdowns in the third quarter sank the Montreal Carabins on Saturday at University of Sherbrooke Stadium. The Carabins could not come from behind late in the game.
The game momentum switched over to the Vert et Or when a long drive of 84 yards, which took almost five minutes, finished on a 13 yard touchdown pass from JΓ©rΓ©mi Roch for Carl Gagnon-Bisaillon. Then, Gabriel Cousineau Bleus threw an interception which led to the Vert et Or adding another touchdown on a one-yard run by Felix Marquis-Chevrier.
The Vert & Or had the 17-6 lead, but the Carabins tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. The Carabins had a good drive which that led to a 22 yard field goal by Louis Philippe Simoneau. An interception by Jean-SΓ©bastien BΓ©lisle then gave the ball back to the Carabins. Β Simoneau followed up with his third field goal – an 11 yard attempt.
Forced later to begin a drive from their own territory, the Carabins offence not find a way to add points on the board before the final whistle. Gabriel Cousineau finished with 230 passing yards. He completed 20 of 42 passes and threw two interceptions.
“We made mistakes in all three facets of the game and the Vert et Or did well, especially on defence,” said Carabins Head Coach, Danny Maciocia. “It’s a team loss and we will make adjustments to improve for the rest of the season.”
The Carabins defence did their work in the first half, limiting the Vert et Or to only a Mathieu Hebert 21 yard field goal. The Carabins scored their first points by taking advantage of an interception by Jonathan Boissonneault-Glaou. Louis-Philippe Simoneau followed up withΒ a 33 yard field goal.
In the second quarter while in Vert & Or territory,Β Wilfrid Junior Bien-Aime managed to block a punt. The ball was recovered by the Vert et Or, but they had to concede a safety. The Carabins added a single to their lead before halftime. They missed goal attempts of 28 and 47 yards.
The Carabins defence limited the Vert & Or to 273 offence yards. Quarterback Jeremi Roch, the new CIS record holder with 817 career completions, completed the game with 145 passing yards by completing 16 of 35 passes. But he threw four interceptions in the hands of four different players. He also broke the passing attempt markΒ (1384).
In the standings, both teams have a 3-2 record, but the Carabins have the advantage of the differential points since they won the first game by a score of 32-13 at CEPSUM.
The Carabins will enjoy a week off before hosting the Laval Rouge et Or at CEPSUM Saturday, October 17 at 14 pm. In the first game of the season, the Rouge et Or won the game by a score of 12-9.

SHERBROOKE, Que. β Bishopβs Gaiters senior running back Vincent Davignon returned to the line-up for the first time since suffering an injury in the season opener.Β He ran with a vengeance amassing 100 yards on 19 carries on Saturday in Lennoxville.Β Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the Gaitersβ day in their annual homecoming contest; the McGill Redmen rolled over the host and spoiled the party by a final score of 53-11 in RSEQ University Football.
The cool Lennoxville afternoon did not stop 2019 faithful Gaiters fans and alumni from packing into Coulter Field. The wind appeared to be poised to play a factor as it was blowing hard off the St. Francis River. McGill however did their part to make sure Mother Nature played no role in the outcome as they swept the season series against the Gaiters.Β The Redmen also won 10-3 in Montreal to open the season on Sept. 4.
McGill jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead despite running their offensive plays into the wind in the frame.Β With the wind at their backs they extended their advantage to 19-3 at the halftime break.
After halftime the visitors once again rolled into the wind.Β They put up 13 points to own a 32-3 advantage with one stanza left. Β The Redmen continued to spoil Bishopβs homecoming tallying 21 fourth quarter points before Bishopβs scored at the end of regulation, their first major of the day.
Bishopβs touchdown came on a drive spearheaded by backup quarterback Kyle Sheahan (Ottawa).Β Aided by a few Redmen penalties, Sheahan led the Gaiters to the McGill four-yard line where Jamal Hyman-Hamilton (Toronto) punched it in out of the backfield.Β It was his third major of the year. Sheahan connected with Alex Bouffard (Sherbrooke, Que.) on a successful two-point conversion to give the Gaiter fans something to cheer about on the otherwise gloomy day.
Sheahan in his first CIS contest finished 9-13 for 91 yards.Β He took over from fellow freshman Mathieu Demers (Quebec City) who was 10-18 for 134 yards and an interception.Β Leading the Gaiters offence was Davignon whoβs 19 carries for 100 yards is a career high in both categories.
Bishopβs will now have time to re-group before they are back in action. The entire RSEQ University Football conference will enjoy a bye week over Thanksgiving weekend. The Gaiters (1-4) are next on the field on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they face the Concordia Stingers (2-2) in Montreal.Β Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
