Glenn, Collaros and Watkins named Shaw CFL Top Performers
Tuesday, August 23, 2016 — TORONTO (August 23, 2016) – Kevin Glenn, Zach Collaros and Patrick Watkins were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 9 of the CFL’s 2016 season.
The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
QB | KEVIN GLENN | MONTREAL ALOUETTES
Montreal Alouettes quarterback Kevin Glenn orchestrated a decisive 43-19 win on the road to halt the surging Ottawa REDBLACKS with five touchdown passes on 382 yards.
Glenn wasted no time, throwing a 10-yard pass to Nik Lewis for a touchdown midway through the first quarter, capping off a successful drive down the field and getting the Alouettes out ahead.
His second touchdown pass came in the second quarter, a 17-yard toss to Samuel Giguère in response to an Ottawa touchdown. Less than five minutes later, the native of Detroit, Michigan hit Duron Carter from 76 yards out for another score.
The Alouettes didn’t relinquish the lead Glenn established, and he added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to Brandon Rutley from 14 yards out and the 31-yard strike on the game to Duron Carter. His five touchdown passes matched a career high from 2005.
The product of Illinois State went 25-for-30 with zero interceptions for an 83.3% completion on his most productive game this season. He is currently third in the league in passing TDs with 11, and fourth in passing yards with 2,059. Glenn is the first Alouette to be named a Shaw Top Performer of the 2016 season.
QB | ZACH COLLAROS | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS
In his second game back after recovering from an injury that ended his 2015 season prematurely, Zach Collaros threw a career-high five touchdown passes on 381 yards to put Hamilton over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their first home win of the 2016 season.
Collaros looked in fine form, connecting on 23-of-31 of his passes and starting the game with an exciting nine-play, 60-yard drive tapping into four different receivers. He delivered on his first touchdown pass to Andy Fantuz for the 37-yard score midway through the first quarter.
Collaros opened and closed the second quarter touchdowns, beginning with a 58-yard bullet to Brandon Banks, who capitalized to bring the Ticats another big score. He ended the first half with a 5-yard connection to Chad Owens for yet another touchdown.
A few minutes into the second half, the Steubenville, Ohio local continued his dominant evening, slinging the ball to Terrance Toliver for a 47-yard major. Collaros’ final TD came at the hands of Chad Owens, who caught 13 yards out and ran it in.
Under Collaros’ leadership the Ticats accumulated 507 yards of net offence against the Roughriders. The former Cincinnati Bearcat has 712 yards and seven touchdowns through two games this season. Collaros finished the 2015 season third overall in the Shaw Top Performers rankings.
CB | PATRICK WATKINS | EDMONTON ESKIMOS
Edmonton Eskimos cornerback Patrick Watkins notched the fourth multiple-interception game in his career in the Eskimos’ convincing 46-23 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday.
Watkins, a native of Tallahassee, Florida, snagged his first interception of the season midway through the first quarter. He intercepted Logan Kilgore pass that was intended for Kenny Shaw; Watkins went on to return it 24 yards deep into Argonauts territory. Two plays later, Calvin McCarty scored a touchdown to make it 13-8 for Edmonton.
Three plays into the second half Watkins intercepted another pass, this time one intended for Kevin Elliot, and returned it 18 yards. Once again it led to an Eskimos touchdown from Mike Reilly, a one-yard run to give Edmonton a 39-14 advantage.
The Florida State product also added six tackles and a pass knockdown.
Watkins is second on the team with 41 tackles this season and now leads the team in interceptions with two.
Watkins was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer once last year in Week 6.
