Vert et Or announces first wave of recruits

The Sherbrooke Vert & Or Sherbrooke University have announced their first wave of recruits.   Fifteen newcomers will begin their academic journey in January.

Of the new recruits, the Vert & Or landed two from CEGEP Diviison 2 champions Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Geants  – Vincent Roy (offensive line) and Gabriel Polan (running back / tight end ) . Polan was also chosen CEGEP Division 2 Final MVP.

Defensive back Justin Roy (Sherbrooke Volontaires) and defensive lineman Samuel Piché-Luneau (Victoriaville Vulkins) will also officially enter the Sherbrooke campus. Last season, both were CEGEP Division 2 stars. In addition to being a defensive star, future law student Justin Roy has distinguished himself by obtaining RSEQ academic merit.

Coveted receiver David Savard of Beauce-Appalaches Condors, is expected to make an impact this fall with the Vert et Or. Savard scored seven touchdowns and had an average of 9.4 yards per carry last fall.

In addition to Vincent Roy, Vert et Or Offensive Coordinator Mathieu Pronovost will benefit from four more offensive linemen – former France National Team member Vincent Deslage, former Edouard-Montpetit Lynx Mathieu Michaud-Bombardier and Philippe Pichet, as well as Guillaume Pelletier (Lévis-Lauzon Faucons).

Ten of the 15 recruits confirmed  will find themselves on the offense. That includes receivers Noboru-Ian Ouellette (24 receptions for 306 yards with Lanaudière Triades) and Philippe Blackburn (Chicoutimi Cougars). Both are from CEGEP Division 3 teams. Another addition is fullback Alexander Sasset-Blouin from Sherbrooke Volontaires.

Vert et Or Defensive Coordinator Guillaume Boucher and his assistants greet Nicolas Trépanier (four interceptions in 2014 with Trois-Rivières Diablos), linebacker Olivier Dionne (36.5 tackles with Lévis -Lauzon Faucons) as well as defensive lineman Diego Cacheiro-Millette  (three quarterback sacls and five tackles for loss with Édouard-Montpetit Lynx last fall).

“Our coaching staff is really pleased so far with the quality of college players who decided to join the Vert & Or for next season even though the recruitment period is far from over for us,” commented Vert & Or Head Coach David Lessard. “These are young men who fit very well with our team, both in terms of needs by position and their mentality.”

“They correspond to the identity of our team and have great potential.”

It is expected that a dozen other young recruits will complement rhis first wave by the beginning of winter training in 2015.
