Western makes late recruiting splash with transfer

Calgary linebacker transfers to OUA team, strengthening 2015 recruiting class

Since his appearance in the 2013 East West Bowl, Cory Roboch always held a soft spot for London, Ontario and especially the Western Mustangs football program.

Now, he will get his chance to live in the city while helping the team contend for a Vanier Cup.

The Mustangs have officially announced the addition of Roboch to the football program. The 6’1, 215 pound linebacker from Calgary, Alberta will join the team the 2015 OUA season.

Most recently, Roboch played for the Canada West team, Calgary Dinos.  During his three seasons with the team, he recorded seven sacks, had six forced fumbles and registered over 140 tackles. As mentioned above, Roboach was selected to participate in the 2013 East-West Bowl.

Previous to the Dinos, the linebacker suited up for Bowness Trojans of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA). Among the honours Roboch earned included Alberta Senior Bowl selection (2010), Trojans MVP (2010) and Trojans Defensive Player of the Year (2009).

Roboch will be able to play this upcoming season for the Mustangs.  Moreover, he will have two years of CIS eligibility remaining.

“We’re very excited to announce the addition of Cory Roboch to our football program,” commented Mustangs Head Coach Greg Marshall.  “Cory brings a wealth of experience to our linebacker core.”

“He joins us from a great program in Calgary and has had some tremendous coaching there.”

Mustangs Recruiting Coordinator Tom Flaxman said that it will be a smooth transition for Roboch during his transfer from teams.

“Cory was already familiar with a number of our players and our campus having participated in the 2013 East-West Bowl,” elaborated Flaxman.  “He sat out last year with an injury so he’ll be to suit up for us this season.”

“Cory is a welcome late addition to our program.”

After his participation in the 2013 East-West Bowl, Roboch was hooked on the experience he had with both the football program and the community.

“The reason why I committed to Western was because while I was at University of Calgary, I came here for the 2013 East-West Bowl and loved all aspects of the city and the culture that was in London,” recalled the linebacker.  “I really like how the team is well supported by alumni and the community itself.”

Furthermore, the Mustangs’ sense of kinship was something that majorly appealed to Roboch.

“I also like the team atmosphere and how it’s a large family here and they all play for each other and always have one another’s back, which in turn helps the team succeed because everyone wants to win and don’t want to let the guy down they are playing beside,” expressed the defensive standout.

Coming from a program that has traditionally excelled at the national level, Robach has faith and high expectations that the Mustangs are in a great position to hoist the Vanier Cup future years.  Ultimately, he hopes to play a significant role in achieving the team’s main goal.

“This team has a good chance to compete for a Vanier Cup,” commented Roboch.  “I’ve come from a very good program and have been to four semi-final and three Vanier Cups and I just feel that this team has all the tools to win a national championship.”

“I came out here from University of Calgary to do just that.”
