CFC #2 Pride take provincial championship

Alberta Bowl Tier IV, III and Tier I Games

The Alberta Bowl High School Football Championships finished off today with three games.

Tier I
CFC #2 Notre Dame 37  CFC #3 Spruce Grove 8

The old adage is “defense wins championships” and in the game billed as the unstoppable offense of Spruce Grove vs. the unbeatable defense of Notre Dame, Notre Dame dominated not only with their out of this world defense but also with their offense in the Tier I Provincial Championship. Notre Dame had a game total of 361 yards rushing, while Spruce Grove had 154. Grade 10 sensation Colton Hunchak (picture) helped lead Notre Dame to victory with an Alberta Bowl record 190 yards pass receiving including 3 touchdowns on passes from his brother Brett. Notre Dame’s Brandon Blondeau also had a stand out game running the ball for 140 yards and scoring 1 touchdown. Spruce Grove , who averaged over 58 points a game going into this contest only scored once on Edward Ilnicki’s 3rd quarter TD run which wasn’t near enough as the Panthers fell to the Pride by the  final score of 37-8.

Tier IV
Drumheller 42 Ardrossan 21
Drumheller’s Josh Weeteringen scored 3 touchdowns to help his team hold the lead for the entire Tier IV Provincial Championship game against Ardrossan. In the 3rd quarter Ardrossan came back to make the game a close 28-21, only to have Drumheller’s Chase Kostelecky score his second touchdown of the game to seal the victory with 10:19 left in the game. Drumheller went on to score one more touchdown to finish off the game with a 42-21 win and their second straight Provincial Tier IV Championship.
Tier III
Cochrane 30 St. Albert 21
St. Albert’s strong defensive showing was not enough to make up for their late offensive start to versus Cochrane in the Tier III Provincial Championship game. Cochrane sprinted to a 16-0 lead before Keith Zyla, St. Albert’s strong armed QB helped lead St. Albert to a 3rd quarter comeback to take the lead for the first and only time in the game 21-16 on tossing two TD’s to Rocky Borrelli and one to Brandon Thera. The comeback was not enough against Justin Mount, who had 83 yards rushing and 37 yards pass receiving, and Kyle Moortgat, who had  89 yards pass receiving as the Cobras both scored twice in the 4th quarter to seal the 30-21 win for Cochrane which is their seventh Provincial Tier III title since 2000.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
