CFC Ranks: CJFL top 10 (1) “Colts buck a 7 year trend”

After much demand, and we believe deserving, CFC has embarked on a new ranking in 2012.  The Canada Junior Football League CJFL (Under-23) has been contesting national champions since 1907.  This storied league has produced many professional players and professional athletes.  Help us celebrate the tradition of the CJFL by adding your ‘two cents’ about the top 10 rankings.

1 Calgary Colts (1-0) PFC
Colts beat Hilltops on Broom field goal by Jeff MacKinnon

The Colts defeated the Hilltops for the first time in seven years, beating them in their own backyard no less.  A 42-yard field goal by Marshall Broom with 16 seconds remaining sealed the 2 point victory.  Host Regina this weekend.

2 Vancouver Island Raiders (1-0-1) BCFC
Raiders suffer rare tie in home opener by Kalan Anglos

After a slow start the offense found a rhythm and veteran QB Jordan Yantz ended up throwing for 416 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Will be tested in game three when they host rival Okanagan Sun.

3 Langley Rams (1-0-1) BCFC

Early season surprise in the CJFL is the upstart Rams.  Rookie quarterback Greg Bowcott finished 23 of 31 for 286 yards and matched Yantz with four touchdowns.  The Rams (1-0-1) will finally host their home opener on Saturday when the Chilliwack Huskers (0-2) visit

4 Regina Thunder (1-0) PFC

Held on to victory despite penalties and fourth quarter injury to starting QB Asher Hastings.  Offense will be tested this week against the Colts with rookie QB Kyle Siemens under center.

5 Saskatoon Hilltops (0-1) PFC

The 2-time CJFL defending champions had a rare home loss in the opening weekend.  The veteran defense will have to play better to help the young offense mature.

6 Windsor AKO Fratman (1-0) OFC

Robb Matton ran for 142 yards on 13 carries to help the Fratman to a shutout victory in week one.   The AKO open their home schedule this weekend against Brampton.

7 Burlington Braves (1-0) OFC
Braves upset Hamilton in season opener

Spoiled the Hamilton Hurricanes home opener with 45 to 38 shootout victory.  Former SMU Huskie QB Mack Blewett led the offense to victory.

8 Okanagan Sun (1-1) BCFC

Rookie head coach Gavin Lake got his first win on the weekend against Kamloops.  Bobby Davis ran for a pair of touchdowns in the victory.  Travel to Nanaimo this weekend.

9 London Beefeaters (1-0) PFC

The defense had five interceptions and harassed the Brampton quarterbacks all night.  Next up, the high-powered St. Leonard Cougars on Saturday at TD Waterhouse Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

10 Edmonton Wildcats (1-0) PFC

Got three touchdowns from rookie running back Jordan Samoli en route to a 34 to 20 victory over the Winnipeg Rifles.

CJFL ranking members

CJFL ranking members include 4 CFC reporters and 4 unaffiliated former CJFL coaches.  The rankings will continue until the end of the regular season and there is potential for more contributors to be added during this time.  No affiliated CJFL members contribute to these rankings.
