CFC ‘top 10’ Ontario Summer rankings: Varsity & Junior Varsity (Week 3) “big week”

NOTE: We updated Junior Varsity rankings as per an erroneous score reported

Here is CFCs ranking of the top 10 Varsity & Junior Varsity teams in Ontario summer football. The two leagues that are eligible for this ranking are the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) & the Ontario Football Conference (OFC). These two leagues do not play against one another during the regular or playoff seasons.

A few changes have occurred in the ‘TOP 10’ as a result of week 3 game results and play.

VARSITY (Under 20)

1. (1) Burlington Stampeders (OFC) – [3-0]

Another game, another big halftime lead. The Stampeders were up 34 to 0 at half and as usual cruised to another victory, this time over the Chatham-Kent Cougars. Next Sunday at 5:00 pm the Stampeders host the Twin Cities predators which should be their biggest test to date.

2. (2)Essex Ravens (OVFL) – [3-0]

Another week, another close victory for the Ravens. Cody McCann and Nick Vincent again combined for over 200 yards rushing in the victory. The Ravens say that turnovers and special teams play was the reason for the close score. An interesting match up this week versus London.

3. (3)Toronto Thunder (OVFL) – [2-1*]

Defeated Pickering by a score of 34 to 14 on the weekend. Play the Myers Riders this weekend which is always a spirited affair. Jayde Rowe continues to lead the league rushing title by a wide margin and may be the best 17 year old in the OVFL. His 649 yards and 10 touchdowns in three games is impressive.

4. (4) Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL) – [3-0]

This week’s victory was never in doubt against the Guelph Bears. Once again QB Alex Hill led with his arm and legs. It was RB by committee with all ball carriers contributing to the cause highlighted by TD runs by Quinn Newman and Ryan Silvestri. LB Joe Richardson played sideline to sideline picking up sacks, causing fumbles, and even scoring an offensive TD. Play Mississauga this weekend, the best 0-3 team in the province.

5. (8) Ottawa Myers Riders (OVFL) – [3-0]

Defeated the Grenadiers 17 to 8, holding on to the victory, in a scoreless second half. The defense held Grens RB Josh Thompson to his first sub 100 yard performance. Will need all that and more to contain Jayde Rowe this Saturday.

6. (7) Twin Cities Predators (OFC) – [3-0]

Outlasted the Huronia Stallions 24 to 21, which was a surprise for us. The Stallions came off a loss to Sudbury but gave the Predators all they can handle. Should set up an interesting match versus the Stampeders this weekend.

7. (10) Metro Toronto Wildcats (OVFL) – [2-1]

Outlasted the Eagles in a shootout 41 to 31 victory late Sunday night. Another late Sunday match up versus Pickering should tell us who are the best teams in the GTA.

8. (HM) Niagara Spears (OVFL) – [2-1]

Played in what may have been the game of the week, outlasting the London Falcons in a 38 to 36 offensive field day. The Spears racked up impressive offensive stats β€” 430 total yards (138 rushing, 292 passing), 19 first downs and five touchdowns. Alex Charette caught a pair of touchdown passes and Jon Mataya, Morgan Lavoie and Alex Coutu also had majors. Take the long road trip to Sault Ste Marie this week.

9. (6) Brampton Bulldogs (OVFL) – [2-1]

Lost a close match to the #2 Essex Ravens 24 to 21 in Windsor. The offense could not capitalize on the takeaways the defense provided. Play the upstart Cambridge Lions who are coming off a solid performance against Mississauga.

10. (HM) Ottawa Cumberland Panthers (OVFL) – [2-1]

Bounced back from a loss against cross town rivals with an impressive victory over Cornwall 46 to 21. The hogs led the way, with over 440 yards produced on the ground.

Honourable Mentions:
Sault Ste Marie (OVFL), Cambridge Lions (OVFL), London Falcons (OVFL), Etobicoke Eagles (OVFL)

* Toronto Thunder defeated Etobicoke Eagles in week 1 action in overtime 36 to 30 but the game was forfeited due to ‘ineligible player participation’ – Etobicoke is awarded a 20 to 0 victory

JUNIOR VARSITY (U20)

1. (1) Ottawa Myers Riders (OVFL) – [3-0]

Continued their strong play with a 28 to 7 victory over the grenadiers in Kingston. QB Michael Arruda continues his early season success bolstered by a strong running game led by Alex Brazeau. Big test against the number 4 ranked Toronto Thunder this weekend.

2. (2) Burlington Stampeders (OFC) – [3-0]

Averaging over 50 points per game, the Stampeders look to continue their winning ways against what will be their toughest test to date. Be sure to be in Burlington sunday at 2:30 for this big match up.

3. (3) Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL) – [3-0]

A 31 to 16 victory over guelph sets up a a tough match up with the Mississauga Warriors this weekend. Emmett Putt from Kyle Van Wynsberghe…remember that combination.

4. (4) Mississauga Warriors (OVFL) – [3-0]

Initially reported incorrectly the score of the Mississauga – Cambridge game. The Warriors defeated the Lions 21 to 10 and look like one of the teams to contend this year. With a date against the Ironmen this weekend things should become pretty clear as to who is the best in southern Ontario OVFL action.

5. (5) Toronto Thunder (OVFL) – [3-0]

Held strong at #5 with a weekend victory 26 to 7 over the Pickering Dolphins. Should set up another great match up this week…one of three top ten match ups on the week. Myers Riders visits saturday.

6. (6) Twin Cities Predators (OFC) – [3-0]

Held on to their 6th place position winning 35 to 20 over the Forest City (London) Thunderbirds. But it is this week that will be the big test and determination of rankings going forward. Bring on the Stampeders.

7 (10) Niagara Spears (OVFL) – [2-1]

Climbed 3 positions because of some impeccable defense against London on the weekend, surviving with a 15 to 8 victory. Mack Jones paced the offence with 17 carries for 145 yard. On defence, Conner Warnock had 10 assists and six solo tackles. Robert Purcha had five assists and a solo tackle and Marc Plamondon six assists and a solo tackle. Play Newmarket this week.

8. (NR) Metro Toronto Wildcats (OVFL) – [2-1]

Cruised to a 35 to 14 victory over the Etobicoke Eagles. The offense was led the nifty running of Pelle Jorgen (Team Ontario – East) and the solid play of QB Brett Stein and receiver Malcolm Carter. This could be the sleeper team of the age group.

9. (7) Cambridge Lions (OVFL) – [2-1]

Initially reported a Cambridge win versus Mississauga, we have since updated the error. The Lions lost 21 to 10 which justified our week 2 ranking. The Lions hope to get back on track this weekend versus the Brampton Bulldogs.

10. (8) London Falcons (OVFL) [1-2]

Lost their second close game of the season to a top 10 opponent. The offense was frustrated all day by the Niagara defense. Hope to rebound this weekend versus the Essex Ravens.

Honourable Mention:
Cumberland Panthers (OVFL), Essex Ravens (OVFL), Guelph Bears (OVFL), Toronto Jr. Argos (OFC)

NOTES:
a) teams eligible for ranking play in the OVFL or OFC
b) Contributors to the ranking include CFC reporters, CIS coaches, OVFL & OFC scouts – the pre-season team of contributors totaled 15 individuals…which we anticipate to grow during the course of the season
c) the only rule difference between the two leagues is that the Varsity OFC division plays 3-downs where all others play 4-downs
d) We will rank the ‘top 10’ up until and including the final regular season weekend
e) Have fun
