CISAA: St. Andrew’s beats Ashbury in Opening Game

The St. Andrew’s Saints got their 2012 season off to a roaring start by defeating the Ashbury Colts 45-12.

The 2011 CISAA Champion Saints were able to dominate the play from start to finish and are looking for this momentum to carry into this week’s game against the powerful Upper Canada College Blues.

For the Saints it was running back Jonathan Femi-Cole who stole the show with a six touchdown performance. Saint’s head coach Len Gurr was very pleased with his performance saying, “Jonathan was tremendous today. Given the fact that he is only 16, we’re incredibly excited about what the future has in store for him. Scoring six touchdowns in one game is a remarkable start to his St. Andrew’s College career”.

Of course Femi-Cole was not the only player to have a good game. Coach Gurr was also very pleased with the play of his offensive line starring Peter Godber, Brandon Benoit, Darien Arscott, Cody McMillan and Adam Ashby, as well as his quarterback, newcomer Chris Merchant. Marchant, who is also the Saints kicker recorded one field goal and six PATs to add to his stats on Saturday. The defense was led by captains Ty Topolinski and Jake Stirling. Stirling recorded a fourth quarter interception, while Topolinski was solid in the backfield.

Ashbury who finished last season with a 4-1 record were able to put some points on the score sheet thanks to wide receiver Adam Guarisco and kicker Ryan Bayne. They also forced the Saints to concede a safety, but that is as close as the Colts would get.

The St. Andrew’s Saints will need to take the momentum from this win and use it to their advantage as they will play a rematch of last year’s CISAA championship game against the UCC Blues. The Blues also had a great first game winning 59-2 against Trinity College School last Saturday. The game should be an exciting, high tempo affair so if you find yourself in the area, be sure not to miss it.

The Saints will play the Blues Saturday September 29that 2:30PM at Upper Canada College, while the Colts will face off against Villanova College at Ashbury at 1:00PM on the same day.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
