CJFL: BCFC week 6 in review (VIDEO)

Week Six in the British Columbia Football Conference (BCFC) finished similar to Week 3 with the Raiders, Rams and Rebels all recording their fifth wins of the season.

The first game of the weekend was in Kelowna as the Okanagan Sun hosted the Vancouver Island Raiders.  Back in Posted ImageWeek 3 the Raiders escaped with a 30-29 victory.  Here in Week 6, the score wasn’t as close, but the Raiders record the same result with a 44-28 win.

Quarterback Jordan Yantz finished 14 of 23 for 268 yards and two touchdowns.  His favourite receiver was Whitman Tomuziak who caught four balls for 110 yards and two majors including one from 32 yards out on their first play from scrimmage.  Michael Schaper had five catches for 88 yards.

Yantz would set yet another Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) record in the victory.  With his 268 yards, he sets a new career record for passing yardage.  He now has 9,405 yards through the air, breaking the old mark of 9,370 held by former Regina Thunder and Vancouver Trojan, John Makie.

The ground game was snuffed out by the Sun defence as Ashton Galloway rushed 15 times for only 84 yards, but did score a touchdown.

Kicker Mark Mueller was a perfect three for three hitting field goals from 23, 25 and 40 yards out.  He would connect on his 50th career field goal and becomes just the third BCFC player to reach the 50 field goal plateau.  The record is 68, held by Scott Dixon who played with the Raiders and Rebels.

Also on special teams Dustin Pederson would run back a punt 61 yards for a score.

The Raiders “D” would force four turnovers, two fumble recoveries to match interceptions made by Glenn Boyce and Ariel Fabbro.  Taylor Saine, Boyce and Dylan Chapdelaine each had six solo tackles.   Rock Angrand would record the lone Raiders sack.

The Raiders (5-0-1) will stay on the road and meet the Langley Rams (5-0-1) in a first place showdown on Saturday afternoon.

Turnovers once again plagued the Okanagan Sun who lose their fourth straight game.  QB Cam Bedore finished 18 of 32 for 175 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Ben White caught five balls for 57 yards and the lone TD pass.  Tommy Howes also caught five balls for 39 yards.

On the ground Alex Bradley had the best game of his young career.  The “McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game” rushed a game high 16 times for 184 yards including a 61 yard scamper for a major.  Robert Giorno would also score on the ground, from one yard out.

Defensively the Sun were led by Steven Doege who had three solo tackles, two assists, the only Sun sack and would jump on a fumble.  Both Jack Rush and Alex Hupe recorded four solo tackles each.

The Sun (1-5) will host the Kamloops Broncos (1-5) on Saturday afternoon in a battle for the final playoff spot.

Also on Saturday the Langley Rams kept pace with the Raiders recording their fifth win of the year, a 45-7 victory over the Chilliwack Huskers.

The Rams would amass 426 yards of total offense.  The club was led by the “McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Posted ImageGame” Kyle Albertini.  The veteran rushed nine times for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Daniel Xavier rumbled eight times for 90 yards and a major.  Nick Downey and back-up quarterback Cecil Belanger also rushed for touchdowns.

The touchdown by Downey marks the 40th in his career.  Three rushing TDs. 22 receiving, four from kick-offs and 11 on punt returns.

Malcolm Williams would catch a game high six balls for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Starting QB Greg Bowcott finished four of eight for 59 yards and the TD to Williams.  Back up Belanger was seven of 16 for 87 yards.

The Rams defense would force five turnovers and five quarterback sacks.  Jeremy Preston, Alex Angoletto, Brandon Klein and Evan Foster had sacks.  Klein and Adam Konar shared a sack.  Arie Nakagawa and Andy Lee picked off passes while Curtis Schindel recovered two fumbles.

The Rams (5-0-1) will host the Vancouver Island Raiders (5-0-1) on Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm, in a battle for first place.

The Chilliwack Huskers were frustrated all afternoon recording just 54 yards of total net offense.

Quarterback Braden Churly finished five of 23 for 51 yards and threw two interceptions.  He would also run 16 times for 39 yards.

Josh Hayden caught three of the five pass for 26 yards.  He also ran four times for 20 yards.

The lone Huskers touchdown came from their defence.  Jerry Sidhu ran back a 60 yard pick six and also recovered a fumble.  Dan Erickson would lead the club with six solo tackles and one assist.  Kris Bush and Jordan Milankovics both jumped on Rams fumbles.

The Huskers (0-5) will host the Westshore Rebels (5-1) on Saturday afternoon.

The most exciting game of the week was in Westshore where the hometown Rebels recorded their 120th franchise win, barely hanging on for a 48-41 victory over the Kamloops Broncos.  Down 34-7 at halftime the Broncos came storming back, scoring 34 points in the second half, but came up short in completing the comeback.Posted Image

Rebels quarterback Mark Black would complete nine of 18 for 148 yards and three touchdowns.  He would also score a touchdown on the ground.  Back-up Jesse Herman was three of six for 87 yards and major.

Eric Eggleston hauled in a game high five passes for 102.  Cat Todorovich and Vinnie Cannata both caught two touchdowns.

On the ground Greg Morris carried the rock 14 times for 103 yards and scored two majors.

The Rebels “D” were led by Braeden Swatez who tied a CJFL record with five battled balls.  He would also record four solo tackles, two assists and intercepted a pass.  Justin Pierre had a sack and he and Eli Brown recovered fumbles.

The Rebels (5-1) will travel to Chilliwack to take on the Huskers (0-5) on Saturday afternoon.

The Kamloops Broncos came “oh so close” to moving into the final playoff spot, thanks in large part to their special teams.

The “McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game,” Grady Chalmers set a new BCFC record and tied a CJFL record with three blocked kicks. Not to be outdone, returner Derek Apps established a new Broncos record for kick-off return yards with 228.  The BCFC record is 268 yards.  He would also run back a kick 104 yards setting a new club record.

The Broncos “O” was led by back-up QB Connor Whitelaw.  The rookie would finish 11 of 19 for 220 yards and two touchdowns.  His main target was Carter Bilawchuck who caught four passes for 141 yards and caught both TD throws.  Both Derek Yachison and Seam Poeppel hauled in three passes.

The Rebels did a great job stopping the Broncos run.  Mike McMaster carried 11 times for 25 yards.

Defensively the Broncos would jump on the three blocked kicks by Chalmers.  They would also recover a fourth Rebel fumble. Tyler Lee would again lead the Broncos with six solo tackles and one assist.  Chalmers also had a sack, as did Braden McCarthy.

The Broncos (1-5) will travel to the Okanagan for a date with the Sun (1-5); the winner will be in the driver seat in locking down the final playoff spot.
