CJFL: BCFC week 7 in review

The Game of the Week in the BCFC turned out to be a lopsided affair as the Vancouver Island Raiders take sole possession of first place and remain undefeated after a 41-29 victory of the hometown Langley Rams.

Quarterback Jordan Yantz finished 19 of 30 for 370 yards and threw four touchdowns.  He would distribute the ball to seven different receivers.  Matt Sawyer was his favourite receiver catching six passes for 75 yards and two majors.  Whitman Tomuziak continues to be a force with just three catches, but compiled 123 yards and two touchdowns.  Dustin Rodriguez caught five passes for 98 yards.

Ashton Galloway would lead the rushing attack with 12 carries for 48 yards.  Andrew Deleon carried three times for 30 yards.

The Raiders special teams factored in as Aaron Gordon ran back a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.

Defensively the Raiders were led by John Jones with six solo tackles.  The “D” would force two Ram turnovers as Quinton Clarke picked off a pass and Erling Skuggedal jumped on a fumble.  They would also tally three sacks Rock Angrand, Logan MacKay and Nathan Warawa all brought down the quarterback.

The Raiders (6-0-1) will host the Okanagan Sun (2-5) on Saturday at 2:00pm.

The Langley Rams tasted defeat for the first time this season as their offense would compile 375 net yards.

Quarterback Greg Bowcott finished 16 of 24 for 280 yards and threw one touchdown to Malcolm Williams.  The BCFC rookie caught six passes for 74 yards.

Nick Downey was once again the spark plug for the Rams.  The veteran returned his 12th career punt for a touchdown, tying a CJFL record.  He would also catch five passes for 141 yards in addition to his two carries for four yards.  With his 283 all purpose yards, Downey was named the “McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game.”

The Rams ground game was led by Daniel Xavier, who had a game high 14 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively the Rams forced two turnovers as Adam Konar picked off a pass and Darrien Fung recovered a fumble.  The Rams would knock down Yantz twice as Alex Angoletto and Joe Patko recorded sacks.  Joe Lester made five solo tackles and had a knock down while Patko, Arie Nakagawa and Evan Foster each had four tackles.

The Rams (5-1-1) will travel to Westshore to play the Rebels (6-1) on Saturday.

The Okanagan Sun were the only home team to win in Week 6, snapping their first ever four game losing streak after a 42-18 victory over the Kamloops Broncos.Posted Image

It’s the second win over the Broncos this season as quarterback Cam Bedore was 11 of 21 for 244 yards and threw a touchdown.  Ben White, Bobby Davis and Tommy Howes each caught three passes.  White tallied 84 yards and caught a touchdown pass.

On the ground Alex Bradley was named the “McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game” after his 12 carries compiled 89 yards and two touchdowns.  He now has four majors in the last two games.   Robert Giorno and linebacker Adam Hohmann also scored touchdowns on the ground for the Sun.

The Sun defense had a terrific game forcing five turnovers including a 63 yard pick six for Sheldon McDonald.  Brian Ralph, Daniel Dubinski and Blake Butler also picked off passes.  Nico Sokolowski recovered a fumble.  Steven Doege led the Sun pressure with five solo tackles and an assist, while Zac Ironstand had the only sack.

The Sun (2-5) will travel to the Island to play the Raiders (6-0-1) on Saturday afternoon.

The Kamloops Broncos had a chance to leap frog the Sun for the final playoff spot, but couldn’t muster enough offense to get the job done.  They would compile just 266 yards.

Connor Whitelaw in his first career BCFC start finished six of 21 for 74 yards, but threw four interceptions.  He would be lifted after the first half.  Back-up Steve Schuweiler finished six of eight for 99 yards and threw a touchdown on the final play of the game.

Seven different Bronco receivers caught passes including Kevin Lee, who’s only catch was a three yard touchdown.  Travis Kent made three receptions for 27 yards.

Wes Black led the running charge with 11 carries for 56 yards, while Mike McMaster had five carries for 39 yards and a touchdown, all in the second half.

The Broncos would force two more Sun turnovers as Adam Nesbitt picked off two Bedore passes.

Derek Apps made five solo tackles and had a knock down while Landon McKim recorded a sack and Chris Rosa and Grady Chalmers shared one.

The Broncos (1-6) will host the Chilliwack Huskers (0-7) for the lone Sunday game with kick off set for 4:00pm.

The Westshore Rebels continued their hot streak, winning their sixth in a row; 33-3 over the Chilliwack Huskers on Saturday.  Their win streak matches their longest in history; matching the 2002-2003 seasons and again in 2004.

The Rebels had a well balanced attack with 339 total offensive yards; 196 yards on the ground and 152 through the air.
Running back Greg Morris had another outstanding game and was named the “McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game.”  He would rush 150 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns.Posted Image

Quarterback Mark Black finished nine of 15 for 80 yards and threw a touchdown, while back-up Jesse Herman was four of five for 72 yards and a major.

Eric Eggleston made five catches for 58 yards and had a touchdown.  Fikreiwnet Yitna had three catches for 66 yards and a score.

Defensively the Rebels made three interceptions, two of which from Braeden Swatez and the other by Colton Farago.   The “D” would also compile three sacks as Justin Perrie had two of them while Wyatt Gray had one.  Perrie also had an assist and a block.

The Rebels (6-1) will host the Langley Rams (5-1-1) in a battle for second place on Saturday.

The Chilliwack Huskers continue to fight this year giving the Rebels a strong fight.

Quarterback Braden Churly would finish 16 of 34 for 167 yards and threw three interceptions.  His favourite target was Josh Hayden caught a game high six catches for 70 yards.  James Archer made five receptions for 50 yards.

The Huskers only points came on a 30 yard field goal from Dan Erickson.

The Huskers “D” was led by Jerry Sidhu who made six tackles, had three assisted tackles, a sack and a block.  Dan Coffin, Branden Vickers and Kris Bush each had four tackles, while Shawn Sadler and Jordan Milankovics each had a sack.

The Huskers (0-7) will travel to Kamloops to face the Broncos (1-6) on Sunday.
