PFC WEEK 7 IN REVIEW

EDMONTON WILDCATS 48
EDMONTON HUSKIES    38 SEPTEMBER 15 CLARKE PARK

The two Edmonton clubs met up in another edition of “The Black & Blue Bowl” and it would be the Huskies taking an early 6-0 first quarter lead thanks to a pair of Jonathan Heidebrecht field goals.
In the second period, the home side took the lead as tailback Jordan Samoil scored his first of 4 touchdowns on the night. The Huskies quickly regained the advantage as Stas Bessmertniy scored on a 10-yard run to make it 13-7. The Wildcats would tie the contest as Jordan Olson scored on a 6-yard run. The Samadi convert try missed and the score remained tied at 13. The Huskies would be forced to concede a safety near the end of the half and trailed 15-13 at halftime.
The Wildcats built on their lead early in the 3rd as Samoil carried the mail in from a yard out to make it 22-13. Ryan Migadel would intercept a Trevor Erdmann toss and the Cats would capitalize as Olson found Tyler Henry for a 17-yard touchdown strike. But the Huskies would rally as Bessmertniy rumbled 10 yards for his second score of the night to make it 29-20. Samadi would be good on an 18-yard try to give the Cats a 12-point lead at 3-quarter time.

The Jordan Samoil Show would rumble into gear early on & and the PFC’s leading rusher would score on runs of 58 & 60 yards respectively as he established a PFC & CJFL record for rushing yards with 365 on 33 carries. The previous national best was held by Craig Carter of Windsor who ran for 355 yards in a 1999 game, while the PFC standard was set by ex-Wildcat Tristan Jones who ran for 344 in a 2006 contest.
But the Huskie offense guided by Trevor Erdmann refused to quit as he ran for a fourth quarter touchdown on his way to a 93-yard effort along the ground in addition to passing for 3 touchdowns and 275 yards. They did cut the Wildcat lead down to a 7-point edge, but that was as close as the Huskies got on the night.
The Wildcats host Saskatoon while the Huskies host Calgary in Week 7 action.

SASKATOON HILLTOPS  43
REGINA THUNDER   17 SEPTEMBER 16 GORDIE HOWE BOWL

The Saskatchewan clubs met for the second and final time in the regular season with the Shrine Bowl up for grabs.
The Thunder opened the scoring as Ben Koot chalked up a 40-yard punt single in the game’s 4th minute, but from there, it was the Hilltops in charge as they scored a pair of majors. Graham Unruh hauled in a 15-yard Matt Karpinka pass to make it 7-1, then Tom Shockey scored on a 1-yard dive to make it a 14-1 Saskatoon lead after 1.
The Hilltops blew it wide open in the second quarter as they scored 17 points. First, Zach Schmidt connected on a 38-yard field goal, and then 2 plays later after the Hilltops recovered a Regina fumble, Karpinka found Evan Turkington for an 8-yard touchdown, then in the final minute of the half, Unruh picked up his 4th major in 2 games as Karpinka fired a 10-yard strike less than a minute after Schmidt conceded a safety. Saskatoon had a four score lead at halftime. Karpinka threw for 248 yards and 3 majors.
Asher Hastings started at quarterback for the Thunder, but only was able to complete 7 of 13 passes for 89 yards before Head Coach Erwin Klempner made a “call to the bullpen” and PFC Offensive Player of the Week Kyle Siemens trotted out to start the second half. Siemens got the Regina offense going and found Clay Cooke for a 13-yard touchdown for the lone score of the third frame, but the Hilltops were still very much in charge, leading 31-10 after 3.
The Hilltops went on a 10-0 run as Schmidt was good on his second try of the night and fullback Andre Lalonde, who ran for 116 yards scored on an 11-yard touchdown gallop.
Camille Lagimodiere hauled in a 20-yard touchdown toss from Siemens with less than 4 minutes left and Schmidt would end up wide on a 21-yard try to round out the scoring. Siemens completed 14 of 22 passes for 138 yards.
The Hilltops continue their season-ending 3 game road swing in Edmonton against the Wildcats, while the Thunder take on the 0-6 Rifles at Canad Inns Stadium as both games take place next Sunday.

CALGARY COLTS 63
WINNIPEG RIFLES   22    SEPTEMBER 23 CANAD INNS STADIUM

For 30 minutes on Sunday afternoon, it seemed that the Winnipeg Rifles were set to surprise the PFC & CJFL’s number one club, the Calgary Colts. But a nightmare-inducing fourth quarter turned the game into a blowout as the Colts scored 35 points in the final period en route to a 63-22 pummeling of the Rifles.
After a two-and-out on the Rifles opening drive, Calgary set up shop on a short field as the Colts took 6 plays to travel 52 yards for the game’s first score as Rodreke Joseph picked up his first of three touchdowns on the day as he took in a 10-yard pass from Derek Cooper nearly 4 minutes in.
Brad Mikoluff put the Rifles on the board with a 56-yard punt single. But give the Colts a short field and they’ll capitalize and they did just that 9 minutes into the frame as tailback Chucks Okafor dashed 14 yards to give Calgary a 14-1 lead. Okafor found the end zone 3 times on the afternoon. The Rifles rallied in the last 2 minutes as Martin Hovi, who returned to the lineup after missing last Sunday’s contest in Saskatoon, went up and over from one yard out to cap a 4-play, 29 yard drive.
The Rifles took their first and only lead as they took advantage of an Okafor fumble at their 14 and travelled 96 yards in 8 plays as conference-leading receiver Brett Carter took in a 14-yard Tyler Vieira pass to grab a 15-14 lead. Vieira, who went 13 of 20 for 187 yards, came in for injured starter John Kiesman who took a shot to the ribs in the opening quarter. But the edge was shortlived as Okafor rambled 13 yards for the score that put the Colts ahead by 6 at halftime.
The lone score of the third quarter came in the last 4 minutes as Cooper found slotback Jimmy Ralph and scooted 23 yards to give Calgary a 28-15 edge after 45 minutes. Cooper went 16 of 22 for 214 yards. Then for the Rifles, it would all fall apart.
Backup Colts pivot Jeremy Long scored on a 1-yard sneak to start the fourth quarter that was set up courtesy of an Andrew Fabian 22-yard missed field goal that returner Jason Kelly ran out of his end zone to the eight-yard line where he fumbled and Jason Orey was right there to collect the fumble.
Veteran Colts defensive back Patrick Macdonald would intercept a Vieira pass at the Calgary 52 and ran it all the way back to make it a 42-15 game. The Colts again took advantage of a short field and Long, who went 5 for 5 for 106 yards, connected with Joseph for his second touchdown of the afternoon. Joseph would later cap off his day as he took a 64-yard pass from Long.  Joseph had 8 catches for 148 yards.
The Rifles offense finally found the end zone again in the final 3 minutes as Carter who caught 8 passes for 113 yards hauled in a 13-yard strike from Kiesman who returned in the final quarter.
The Colts added their 5th score of the quarter in the game’s final 90 seconds as Okafor dashed in from 3 yards out to round out the scoring as Jermaine Gabriel’s interception of a Lyle Buckland pass was returned to the Rifle 3. The 35 4th quarter points are a new CJFL record surpassing the Ottawa Sooners who scored 33 in a September 1, 1963 game and the old PFC mark of 30 set by the Regina Rams on September 19, 1981.

Winnipeg drops to 0-6 and out of playoff contention while the Colts retain their 2-point edge on Saskatoon for first place in the conference.
The Rifles wrap up their 2012 home schedule next Sunday against the 3-3 Regina Thunder who were blasted 42-17 at home by the Saskatoon Hilltops on Saturday night. The Colts take to the road to meet the Edmonton Huskies on September 29th.
