During his high school career with the Citadel Phoenix of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL), the team registered two back to back undefeated seasons while winning two Tier 1 championship crowns (2010 and 2011).

Matt says that winning the league championship title this past season high been the most memorable highlight of his football career.

No one thought that we were going to do it because we lost so many key players last year, but our whole team worked really hard to prove everyone wrong,” explains the Phoenix star player of this special experience. “That was sort of the theme last year; proving that we were still the team to beat.”

This past season, the Phoenix standout was the team’s most improved linebacker of the year. Additionally, the league recognized his contributions on the field by selecting him to the Nova Division second all-star team in a linebacker position.

Coaches Damion Byrne and Jeff Lawley have been Matt’s key football influences.

“Coach Damion motivated me early on and pushed me to be my best,” adds the Phoenix standout. ” Coach Lawley believed in me and proved to me that with hard work and dedication, good players can turn into great players.”

Furthermore, Matt’s parents have been a source or guidance and motivation away from the field.

“They guide me along the right path and help me make important decisions,” says Matt. “They always motivate me to excel in everything I do.”

While graduation from high school will be a little over a year from now, the Phoenix linebacker already has future academic goals. At the university level, Matt would like to pursue further studies in either sciences or business.

Ultimately, the Phoenix linebacker knows what the key to success is in realizing all his goals.

“Football has taught me that nothing comes easy in life,” comments Matt. “Success has to be earned.”

“No one is going to give you a free ride and you have to work hard to get what you want.”

Phoenix co-head coach and defensive coordinator Lawley says the Phoenix linebacker is a rare, yet unique talent.

“Every once in a while a truly special player comes along,” comments Lawley. “Matt Nettle is that guy.”

“Matt possesses a rare combination of fantastic athleticism, relentless passion to succeed, great intellect, and true grit.”

Matt’s impact as a player and person has been profound. This bodes well for the Phoenix in their upcoming quest to defend their NSSAFFL Tier 1 championship title in the fall.

“If I had a team full of Matt Nettle’s we’d never lose,” explains the Phoenix co-head coach. “He’s the type of player that because of what he does makes everyone around him better.”

“Citadel is very fortunate to have Matt Nettle leading our defense and our team next fall.”
