Ryan started his football career at nine years of age, suiting up for the Halifax Cougars mite team. Other teams he’s played for include the Dartmouth Destroyers and the Fall River Dragons.

It was during his time with the peewee Destroyers that the standout knew football was the right sport for him.

“This is where I decided that football was something I really like and made it a major part of my life,” adds Ryan.

He achieved the pinnacle of his career playing as an offensive lineman on his high school team, the Lockview Dragons of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL). The Dragons star player was recognized in 2011 for his stellar play on the field, as the league selected him to the Nova Division first all-star team in an offensive line position.

Also in 2011, Ryan got to experience the highlight of his career when the Dragons were victorious in the NSSAFFL Tier 2 championship final. The team won the crown in double overtime over the Halifax West Warriors.

“It was just the way that it ended, it was third and 20 and we ran the ball,” explains Ryan who is also a member of Team Nova Scotia’s under-18 football team. ” I thought this is a bad idea; we need this, why run it?”

“The running back got about eight yards and gets wrapped up and I thought “I know it’s over” but then he tosses it and our receiver runs it in for the touchdown to tie the game. The defense made a big stop after that and we kicked a field goal for the win.”

Dragons head coach Mike Korecki has been the key influence on the offensive lineman’s football career.

“Since he has started coaching me, he has been a great mentor and coach to me,” comments the standout. “He was the one the really helped hone in on my skills and pushed me to be better.”

However, Ryan’s biggest cheerleader on the sidelines has been his mother.

“She has always been there in football and life,” says Ryan. “She is always at every game and she always told me that if I tried hard enough I would be able to take it to the next level.”

There are many future goals that Ryan would like to achieve once he completes high school in 2013. Academically, he would like to study business. Furthermore, the Dragons offensive lineman is considering going to law school.

“It would be great if I had the chance to play in the CFL and if that happens, I would follow that,” adds the Dragons standout of his football aspirations.

Hungry to achieve all his goals, Ryan believes he holds the recipe for success based on all the things he’s learned from the game of football.

“One thing that I learned from football would be that if you want something bad enough you just have to work hard and you can get it,” comments Ryan. “The commitment and dedication that football takes can also be applied to everything in life.”

Korecki says that Ryan is always continually striving to be his best on and off the field. If offseason training is any indication, the Dragons offensive lineman is poised to have a breakout campaign in 2012.

“If you like big high energy guys this is your guy,” explains the Dragons head coach, whose instructed Ryan for the past two seasons. “He can pull traps so he loves the running game and has great feet.”

“He is committed to the Nova Scotia provincial team as well as offseason workouts that will give him a huge edge next season. Ryan as high marks, high energy and a mean disposition so if he continues to push himself, he will be a good one.”
