FCC: Final day predictions and tournament hilites & low-lites (video)

A great week so far at the Football Canada Cup in London, Ontario.

Here are some of the HILITES:

  • air-conditioned dorms
  • kick off return TDs (Ryder Stone) and punt return TDs (D’Sean Thelwell)
  • comeback victories by Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia
  • defensive backs with hands
  • great coaching
  • well traveled parents
  • representation from gold medal winning Canadian National Jr. Team
  • players and coaches from New Brunswick
  • the amount of CIS coaches in attendance
  • well run tournament by Host committee, OFA, Football Canada & Western University

Here are some of the LOW-LITES:

  • the heat (and heat stroke)
  • coaches who like to yell at players because they don’t know what is going wrong themselves (maybe it was the heat)
  • no British Columbia players or coaches
  • decrease in talent level from last 2 years
  • Mercy rule being imposed in 3 of 8 games
  • the possibility of one Ontario team in the future (45% of your high school football players represented on one team)
  • teams not letting CIS coaches speak to their players…com’n man!

Saturday July 21st , 2012 – Game Day 3

Game 9 – Manitoba vs. New Brunswick @ 10:00 am (7th & 8th – Consolation)

This game tends to be an entertaining and interesting one each year.  Manitoba has more weapons (Mattes, Taylor, McKoy) on offense then New Brunswick (Hammond).  The defense of Manitoba will be the difference in this one.  If they can limit Hammond they will win

Manitoba 27 New Brunswick 10

Game 10 – Nova Scotia vs. Ontario East @ 1:00 pm (5th & 6th – Consolation)

A Nova Scotia victory meant they did not have to play New Brunswick for a 3rd time this year.  Ontario East has limited themselves to one formation which should play to Nova Scotia’s favour.  Good friends Luigi Costanzo (East Offensive Coordinator) and Peter Fraser (NS Defensive Coordinator) have bragging rights on the line in this one.  Special teams and QB play will be the difference.

Ontario East 24 Nova Scotia 12

Game 11- Saskatchewan vs. Ontario West @ 4:00 pm (Bronze Medal)

Both teams are obviously disappointed with not making the Gold Medal round, with Ontario possibly more so being a chance to win in their home province.  Both can make amends with a good showing Saturday.  Saskatchewan looks like they have improved from game 1 where as Ontario West looked like they have digressed.  Both defenses are solid.  Special teams and Offensive production will be the difference maker.  Ferrarro and Roberts are poised for solid games.  Noah Picton has improved with every snap for Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan 23 Ontario West 21

Game 12 – Quebec vs. Alberta @ 7:00 pm (Gold Medal)

A rematch of last year’s gold medal game and we believe both teams are better than last.  The Quebec defense showed some vulnerability against Saskatchewan with a few long drives given up in the second half.  The Alberta defense stepped up against Ontario West.  Special teams may be the difference.  Alberta has to match Quebec in the first half to give themselves a chance.  Quebec are the best front runners in the tournament.  Both teams are well coached.

Quebec 23 Alberta 16

CONGRATS TO ALL THE PLAYERS, COACHES, TRAINERS, MANAGERS, ADMINISTRATORS, PARENTS AND OTHER PEOPLE THAT MADE THIS GREAT TOURNAMENT HAPPEN.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
