Football Canada Cup: Alberta’s team game will be led by duo of Calgary Quarterbacks

The Football Canada Cup gets underway this Saturday, July 14th, and Team Alberta will be looking to their Quarterbacks Boston Rowe and Chris Merchant to lead by example.  Both players hail from Calgary, where they attend St. Francis and Western Canada High School, respectively.

In terms of style of play Head Coach Bryan Brandford believes both players have similar characteristics.

“Both of these guys are great athletes with strong arms, but what really makes both of them such good Quarterbacks is their leadership ability.”

Other than the Quarterbacks, Brandford feels the team will be able to rely on a lot of different players.  This team has seven returning players from last year’s team.  Including two out of the three Running Backs, which also helps a bit in terms of continuity.

“We really have good leadership across the board.  We have guys at all positions that can step up and lead.  On defence we will look to guys like LB Brad Friesen, and on offense guys like both of our QBs, and Receiver Adam Zajdel to really lead out there.”

“We have really stressed the concept of playing as a team, and the guys have bought into it.  We tell them to focus on playing the team game and when it comes time to make an individual play, make it for the team.”

In terms of what specific style of offense the team is going to run, that is still unknown.

“We have an outstanding Offensive Line, and a few strong Running backs.  That being said, we also have two great Quarterbacks and a lot of talented Receivers.  So really we will have to see how things go on the field during the game and that will tell us what kind of offense we will run.”

Going into the competition it is hard to say who the clear cut favourites are, but Coach Brandford knows a bit about what to expect.

“Traditionally Quebec has been a very strong team, so we are anticipating them to be very competitive once again.  Also I think that Ontario West will be a team to look out for.  They are the hosting team this year, and having the home crowd and that added support can only help.”

“I think all around we have a strong team this year.  There is going to be tight competition, but I think it is anybody’s to win.  We will have to try and stay healthy, deal with the heat and the fatigue that comes with it, and just play our game.”
