Football Canada Cup: Team Saskatchewan plans to be successful by using unique, provincial style of counter attack

Team Saskatchewan hopes that their hard work ethic will pay off in dividends once they take to the field at the Football Canada Cup.

As the fourth seeded team makes final adjustments to their game execution plans prior to their first round matchup against fifth seeded Team Ontario East, the team knows what the key to their success hinges on.

“The teams strengths are the team speed on offense, defense and special teams,” explains Team Saskatchewan assistant coach Brian Guebert.  “In a tournament like the Football Canada Cup, team speed will help make and prevent big plays.”

When the squad takes to the field on Sunday July 15, 2012 at 4:00pm EST for their first game of the tournament, they will showcase a unique style of play.

“The best way to describe their play is “Saskatchewan Football”,” comments the Team Saskatchewan assistant coach. “It’s tough play with exceptional pursuit to the ball.”

The offensive unit for Team Saskatchewan will be led by two experienced pivots in Jaeden Marwick and Noah Pickton.  Both quarterbacks are returning players who previously suited up for the team at the 2011 Football Canada Cup in Lethbridge, Alberta.  Their experience will be a huge asset and the envy of their opponents at the tournament.

There is another player on the offensive unit who could pose as a threat to opponents on the field.

“Mitch Hillis is a receiver who played with the team in 2011,” says Geubert.  “Mitch brings excellent speed and a great awareness at the receiver position and has great potential for the big play.”

Defensively for Team Saskatchewan, the unit will be led by an effective leader.

“Marcus Hall is a defensive back who has an excellent football IQ and is a captain and a voice on the defense,” comments Guebert.

However, the team’s lack of size could potentially hurt them should they go far in the tournament. However, they hope to address it through one of their key strengths.

“Some weaknesses may surround the size of players on the squad,” adds the Team Saskatchewan assistant coach.  “The lack of size should be made up for with toughness that Saskatchewan teams tend to display.”

Between now and kickoff, Team Saskatchewan continues to work hard to be a viable competitor in the Football Canada Cup.  They know there will be stiff competition but are still focused on achieving their goals in the process.

“We know that all teams will be well prepared with obvious favourites in Quebec and Alberta and knowing the hosts will be exceptionally prepared for this tournament,” says Guebert.   “The goals for Team Saskatchewan are to win each game that they compete in, ultimately play and win the gold medal at the tournament.”
