RECORDS BROKEN AT IFAF UNDER-19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AS SECOND ROUND OF GAMES KICK OFF ON TUESDAY
European rivals France and Sweden clash at 5pm at Burger Stadium in Austin, Texas, followed by American Samoa vs. Panama at 8pm
AUSTIN, TX – Records are meant to be broken and in Saturday’s first day of action at the 2012 IFAF Under-19 World Championship in Austin, Texas, new highs were set in all four match ups.
Spectacular records fell and were equaled as new longest pass, touchdown reception and kickoff return marks were all set to a new standard, while defensive players also got in on the action.
Individuals will have an eye on setting more IFAF competition records when four teams return to the field at Burger Stadium in the state capital on Tuesday this week – but their main focus will be on helping their nation to a first win of the 2012 competition.
The four national teams beaten on the first day of action meet on Tuesday when European rivals France and Sweden clash at 5pm CT, followed by American Samoa and Panama at 8pm CT.
Among the new record highlights, Canada’s starting quarterback Will Finch combined with receiver Doug Corby to equal the longest pass and touchdown pass record of 77 yards in their nation’s 43-0 win over Sweden.
The same number of yards was also covered by Jesus Wilson of USA as he returned the game’s opening kickoff a record 77 yards for a touchdown in a 27-6 win over American Samoa.
Canada quarterback Finch set a new best yards per pass completion (25.1), while his receiver Corby set a new record for yards per reception (32.7) and recorded the second most receiving yards in a single game with 131. Defensively the Canadians also impressed as Adam Melanson set a new high with 3.5 tackles for a loss, while two players – Naoto Miyata of Japan and Panama’s Xavier Ramos – became the first to record a pair of sacks in a single game.
Swedish punter Linus Carlbom took the longest punt (76 yards) and punting average (42.2 yards) records, and when fielding punts, Austria’s Clemens Erlsbacher set a new record average of 21 yards per return.
Players joining the list of top performances included Canada quarterback Hugo Richard, who became the fifth player to score two rushing touchdowns in a game (record is 4 by David Wilson, USA, 2009); Austria quarterbacks Christoph Gubisch and Adrian Platzgummer, who both threw 2 touchdown passes in a single game (record is 5 by Yuichiro Atakai, Japan, 2009); and Demarcus Ayres whose 7 receptions in a single game for the USA was two short of the record (9 by Jumpei Yoshimoto, Japan, 2009). Platzgummer also stands fourth and fifth on the list of longest pass completions and touchdown passes having hit Florian Bundschuh for 59 yards and Dominik Artner for 57 yards.
Sweden’s Oscar Nevermann came up just one yard short of the 193 all-purpose yards in a single game record set by Jumpei Yoshimoto of Japan in 2009 and Nevermann’s 128 kickoff return yards are also second-best in tournament history (159 yards by Thomas Ruiz, France, 2009).
Mercer Timmins’ 63-yard touchdown run was the second longest in Under-19 World Championship history (78 yards by Maxime Boutin, France, 2009) and is third behind Boutin as the longest play from scrimmage.
Nanami Ariwa’s 38-yard field goal equaled the second best in tournament history behind Lirim Hajrullahu of Canada who split the uprights twice from 42 yards and once from 38 yards in 2009).
Xavier Ramos of Panama now sits fourth on the list of solo tackles in a single game having made 8 against Austria (11 by Markus Westmann, Sweden in 2009).
